What hive needs most is an onboarding process for new users!
In the context of the weekly liotes mission, we have asked the Liotes community what are the things that should be built on hive. We have listed a set of features and their task was to put them in order of importance:
We gave them the following options:
A: More good web 3.0 games
B: An onboarding process for Hive (a funnel for new users to teach them about how hive works)
C: E-commerce tools to use Hive, HBD, HE tokens to pay for products and services
D: A knowledge base about Hive
E: New ways to generate income on Hive
F: More DEFI tools
G: Others (your own ideas)
The provided list was not complete and people could also submit their own ideas. However, we didn't have an idea that was suggested by more than one person.
In total, 21 hivians took part in the mission and gave their ranking. Of course this is not a representative query but it gives a helpful indication for what features are needed by the community.
How I treated the results
For each person who gave us a ranking, I wrote the answers in a spreadsheet. If a feature was named first, I gave it one point. The next feature would get 2 points and so on. If one or several features was not ranked by an user, I gave them all the same amount of points but one above the last ranked feature.
Let's say an user ranked the features as follows:
D, B, A, C
D would get 1 point. B would get 2 points, A would get 3 points, C would get 4 points, E and F would get 5 points.
This way of using the data allows basically to see the average rank for each answer. It's a good way in my opinion to compare the results.
The results

Based on these results the need for the features would be in the following order:
B: An onboarding process for Hive (a funnel for new users to teach them about how hive works) – 2.33 average rank
D: A knowledge base about Hive – 3.19 average rank
C: E-commerce tools to use Hive, HBD, HE tokens to pay for products and services – 3.52 average rank
A: More good web 3.0 games – 3.81 average rank
E: New ways to generate income on Hive – 3.9 average rank
F: More DEFI tools – 4.67 average rank
Hive needs an onboarding process!
When looking at these results, there is a huge gap between the best average ranked feature and all the others. It seems that people really think that an onboarding process is very important for hive. This would be a kind of funnel where people are taken through the sign up process and where they would learn step by step how hive works.
A big thanks to all the people who took part in this mission and expressed their opinion!
With @ph1102, I'm running the @liotes project.

Looks like my choices are quite a bit far off from the majority! 🤣
You are not wrong though! That onboarding funnel needs to apply to something that is attractive in the first place. And that's the apps, may they be games, defi, social or anything else.
I would say that there is not one correct answer and one wrong one. It all depends on our own perspective and I believe it's good to hear as many as possible :-)
Hmm
This is nice
Let’s keep onboarding!!!
That would be the objective I believe :-)
That is an interesting result. : )
I believe so too :-)
I believe that onboarding is a complicated part, there's a lot to learn and a lot of expectations are generated and must be controlled in a calm manner. I think a lot of people go in thinking they're going to make "a lot of money", just by posting and we know that's not the case, it's a long road for things to settle down, so this knock on the return is also a point that scares new people away from hive.
I also hear a lot about "having to write" to make money, it seems that people also create these ghosts or maybe it's just laziness, they'd rather risk their money in a betting shop than have to write and build up an asset little by little. In short, there are a lot of challenges and a long way to go to adopt Hive.
I agree with you. What I think is that we need many different ways to attract people. There isn't just one good way I believe. It can be over games or over apps. It always depends what kind of objective is "sold" and to whom it is presented. By just promoting hive as a blockchain we are doing a poor job because before knowing what hive offers, people have to make a choice and in my opinion, we need to come up with different specific solutions.
It's a great way forward, to focus more on everything Hive can offer, not to show posts as a single path. I believe that there are several points, some of which have to do with Hive's structure and the person who is analyzing whether to join. Of course, if the person is already a bit more sloppy, it will get complicated, but other options have to emerge to please both Greeks and Trojans.
Like I said in my post we have personal for that the problem is reaching them. Maybe what we need are tools which include ways to reach out to people who are ready to help them (discord links, the wiki and usernames). Many platforms have a tutorial when you join, like a step-by-step (couple f slides maybe).
I believe that you are right that such a tutorial would come in handy when people join hive.
Hmm are there some typos? Anyway, my top 2 is the same as the result. Haha. Interesting.

I did all this a bit quickly and it's possible I made some mistakes. Sorry about that :-)
No worries hehe!

Thanks for sharing!
A good onboarding programme could be a great way to onboard new people.
Throwing links into X doesn't really mean much in my opinion. We would need to offer a solution for a very precise group of people an then show them the way to get there.
If I gave you $1m per year, could you do it? aka valueplan
Congratulations @achim03! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain And have been rewarded with New badge(s)
Your next payout target is 22000 HP.
The unit is Hive Power equivalent because post and comment rewards can be split into HP and HBD
You can view your badges on your board and compare yourself to others in the Ranking

It looks like people identified the problem very well. It's not all about creating accounts easily (although that matters), it is the training funnel that is the most important part. Can you believe that the most successful app on Hive started focusing on that after 6 years since it launched? Maybe we're slowly maturing. And that speaks about the crypto space in general - many of them are all talk and no product.
I think that we would need a quantity of these training funnels and adapt these to a specific target group. Maybe one funnel to people who want to join games. One funnel for people who want to have a nice time online and want to join a community. One funnel for people for whom a couple of dollars a day could make a difference in their lives. One funnel for people seeking to invest money and get a return. One funnel for people who want to develop apps on a chain.
By throwing around hive links we are selling something very broad to everybody and people should join a chain when they have actually no idea what this chain is capable of.
That's a good point. These targeted funnels should exist. In fact, one existed from @jongolson, I forgot what that program was called.
There are some problems with onboarding+training funnels though. The only way to effectively do them is to build an email list and create a targeted email series. The problem with those is that they often go to spam or people purposely enter their email addresses they don't usually check. The other option is to create a website like Jon and Blain created years ago, that works step-by-step, promote it and get people to join, and from there, everything else that's in the funnel. I don't know of another way to create a funnel.
But that doesn't exclude the fact that each app should have their own internal funnel that leads the new user through the early experience with the app, after they join.
I agree, right now there are too few ways for new people to actually get in contact with the hive blockchain and honestly as a user, it's not really something I actively want to recommend to anyone. The target audience is just too niche and everyone who comes just to earn will mainly produce junk and give up sooner than later.
What I personally would do to get some exposure is partner up with one of the major crypto influences who have a big community like Crypto Banter (or one of the people working for them that also have a show). Give them an account with 1 Million+ Hive or so delegated so they can start their own community on the platform rewarding the users they onboard. One of the issues of Hive is that it's totally outside of the circle of crypto Twitter / Crypto Youtube and nobody is ever mentioning it. I'm sure that would bring in a lot of new users of which some eventually will fall in love with the platform.
Aside from this, it feels like the only thing to hope for is a random pump which increases the earnings so many who left come back also bringing a new cycle where a bunch of new people come in just to earn of which only part will stay once everything dumps again.
I agree with you that at the moment, there are not really many arguments that speak for hive for people to sign up. In addition to that these arguments are not visible from the outside so that people have no idea what hive could actually do for them. I believe we need to target specific groups and offer them a real solution. We shouldn't promote hive but the solution for them and they would sign up to hive without even realizing what it really is. That's exactly what SL did and how it brought a lot of people to hive.
@tipu curate
Thanks for the curation!
Thank you for putting this together. Hive does need a system that allows onboarding easier and new users to be acquainted with the basics without getting overwhelmed.
When you start on hive you need about a year to understand how everything works. However, new users don't really need to know everything. The idea would be to provide them with the minimal necessary information and then to get them hooked. If they like the platform, they will learn the rest by themselves.
Yes, that's right, just the basic info. It will be awesome if a funnel like that exists :)
I agree. The onboarding and retention issue is the biggest issue that I see for Hive.
I think that this mission brought up the biggest issue for hive at the moment.
I think hive actually needs a more better structure that will help to aid the sustainability of those users on ground
