HIVE and Reddit - About Community Moderation

Will Community Moderators have the same Problems on HIVE as Reddit Mods are currently facing?

This article is the expanded version of a conversation I had on DBuzz the other day with @edb. He asked:

"How are moderation tools for Hive communities these days? Can you remove members, posts and comments? Is the interface easy to use?" --[💬]

I don't claim I can answer the question, but I told him a bunch of observations I had about Reddit and Hive over the years. Keep in mind that I barely used Reddit since 2017, so some of what I said might be outdated.

Mods on HIVE --[💬]

I'll start by saying I was never a mod for any community on HIVE so this is a second-hand observation, but generally:

  • Moderators can Mute posts and/or users from their Community on HIVE.

  • Interfaces (like Ecency / Peakd / LeoFinance / DBuzz ) can Mute users.

    • The system DBuzz uses in particular allows people to users create Mutelists and other users to follow them.
  • Some interfaces Let users show the comments that have been muted by the interface/community.

  • NSFW posts are muted by default in most interfaces. It's easy to change the settings to make them viewable.

  • Negative Reputation users are muted by default.

    • Your Reputation decreases when your content is downvoted.

The blockchain is Irreversible --[💬]

  • Deleting posts only stops them from showing on Interfaces.

  • Most posts can't be deleted after getting upvoted once, but you can edit them to be basically empty.

  • There are ways for anyone to find the Edit History of your posts. Be careful.

    • All posts including edited and deleted ones are recorded in the history of the blockchain, you can check them out
  • HIVE has the ability to encrypt Post Contents using your Private Memo Keys.

    • I don't know how it works, and outside One-on-One Private Messages, I don't see the option in any interface.
    • Please if someone knows tell me how it works.

Ease of Use ...? --[💬]

  • HIVE is easy to use, but relatively harder than Twitter, Facebook and even Reddit.

  • Most HIVE interfaces use Markdown. Reddit was markdown based too, if you're on old Reddit user it might feel nostalgic.

    • Some Hive interfaces allow HTML while others don't. Your posts won't look the same on all interfaces. It's better to choose one and focus on it.
  • Your Account Keys are Extra Important. No one can recover them for you if Lost!

Final Words --[💬]

I hope that helps, I used to be a Reddit user back in 2014-2017, but I don't know what changed recently.

I believe Reddit and HIVE fill different niches but some Redditors will love it here. Still, if they're running from Drama though, it's unavoidable. HIVE has its own Drama too. I also noticed that many Redditors delete their posts after a while. A place where your words can't be deleted, even by you, might not be fit for these people.

Finally, I hope I helped... If you think I made a mistake in this article, please let me know. If you find it useful, please share this information with people on Reddit so they can make more informed decisions.

What do you think?

I write fictional stories here on HIVE. I also draw illustrations. Please check my "Where to Start?" post if you like to see more of my content. I also have NFTs for sale if you want to support me directly. For now, have a nice day, and let's meet in another article.

Salam (Peace.)

HIVE has the ability to encrypt Post Contents using your Private Memo Keys.

One could think of a memo key for a community and its moderators are acting as gatekeepers for the community for that key. One could apply publicly for that key and moderators or user of community could vote, if someone is giving access to the key.
That would lock it bit down I guess. But maybe I get something wrong there.

PS: great to see your DFT in action. 👍

Interesting... Is this way to encrypt a community a theory? Or has it been tested to work on Hive Blockchain?

Reddit has a lot of success and tons of people in it. Somehow it proves the value of social interaction and social knowledge to keep communities alive without the need of an in-built token like Hive has.

In-built tokens like Hive are a double-edged sword... It feels like work. It encorages people to not make enemies so more than a few will be fake. (On reddit, people are so unhinged, which can be a good or a bad thing.) The threat of downvotes is stressful. There will always be people who abuse the monetary system and benefit of others' hard work.

Some people will just not participate in this on the principle.
