Let's Play "Downstream Dream" (PICO-8) - Rowing, Rowing Down the Stream

"Downstream Dream" is a boat racing game for PICO-8, you play as two characters who use paddles to propel their boat forward while avoiding rocks and other obstacles.

If you hit an obstacle when you're speeding up, your character if front can fall from the boat, and you have to follow them to save them. It's hilarious and clever!! If you fail to follow them in time, you'll get a Game Over screen.

Downstream Dream is very polished for a PICO-8 project. There are a bunch of When you get faster, the screen zooms out as you scroll faster. The characters you play as, and the ones you play against change each run, which is a nice touch.

As you can see from the video above, I never won. I had a lot of Game Overs happening to me, but I got more than a few laughs while playing. I love it when I lose my player, and I found myself whispering a scream "Aaaaaaaaah~" for my character who couldn't be saved. May God bless his soul.

PICO-8 is a Fantasy Console designed to create, share and play small retro-inspired games. Games made for PICO-8 are constrained in aethistics, code and size to encourage creativity. PICO-8 comes with a built-in code editor, graphics, and sound tools. Games are distributed in image files called Cartridges.
