This post was inspired by today's 5-minute writing prompt in the Freewriters Community - POP !

"Half a pound of rice, please !" the small fellow asked, in an excited tone.

"No problem, that'll be tuppence, please."

He handed two bronze-coloured coins to the shopkeeper, and as he turned to leave, spotted something else.

"Ah, just what I need ! I'll have half a pint of the black treacle, as well."

She shopkeeper poured out a measure of the black tar-like liquid into a jar and passed it over the counter.

"Five pence, please. If you don't mind me asking, what are you making ?"

The fellow replied with a grin, "Why, it's one of my granny's old recipes. Rice pudding with treacle. She always said a little bit after dinner helped her digestion."

"Sounds delicious ! I hope you enjoy it."

It was later that evening. Inspector Terence Oade looked at his colleague, shaking his head sadly.

The TV was still on, but the walls of the living room were dyed red with blood and body parts. An empty dish sat on the table.

"It was too much for him. I know about this rice pudding. You're only supposed to have a little bit. He scoffed the lot. What did you say his name was again ?"

Constable Phillip L. Odd checked the unopened letter on the tabletop. "Something German-sounding. Ah, here it is. Wiesel, Sir. Mr Wiesel".

Inspector Oade scribbled something down and closed his notebook.

"I think we can safely say this case is closed. Cause of death: Pop goes the Wiesel"
