Saturday Savers 2023 Progress Report Week 47

It's Saturday, and time for my weekly #SaturdaySavers update !

Here's my chart of progress this week;

Review of the week

Considering that the week before last was one where I was very tied up with real world things and didn't get to make as many posts as I'd like, last week turned out better than I hoped.

A lot of my earnings are because I'm still keeping up with curation even if I don't post.

I'm behind on my HP and HBD goals right now, but although there aren't many weeks left in the year I think I should (just !) be able to hit the HP one by powering most of my liquid HIVE up on HPUD this coming Friday.

Unless the price of HIVE suddenly spikes in the next 4 week, I don't think I'll be hitting my HBD goal, but (as I mentioned in my update post last week) I think the issue was that I was a bit over-enthusiastic with my target and hadn't taken into account the way the picture can change with the volatility of crypto assets. It makes me wonder if there's a more nuanced way of setting the goals so that they are dynamically tied to the price of the assets concerned.

Hive Engine functionality has been very hard to access for the last couple of days, and slow or buggy when I have been able to see it. My suspicion is that this may be affecting my LEO earnings (e.g. if delegation rewards aren't being processed).

I'm not enough of a techie to know, but it would be good to understand the cause. If it's a technical issue or bug of some kind, it would be nice to get some info posted so we can have confidence it's being worked on.

If it is just down to lack of processing power, perhaps the answer would be to find ways to get more nodes online and to automatically route transactions through nodes that are working well. I don't know how easy it would be for someone non-technical like myself to set up and reliably operate a node, or whether there are any rewards for doing so (not to make a profit, just to help offset the cost of running it).

A Gap In The Ecosystem

Okay, this section is going to be a bit of a rant ! It's something that has been bugging me for a while, and this seems like as good a place as any to get it off my chest 😉

So why is it that almost every community, every front-end, and often individual users insist on directing people away from Hive and onto Discord ? It happens that much that it makes me wonder why "Hive" doesn't operate over there and then just use the blockchain for long-form blog posts.

I have a huge dislike for Discord. Partly for ideological reasons, because Discord is the archetypical Web2 platform; centralised, monitoring everything, censoring what it doesn't like, and owning all the data created there. But mostly just because I find it an over-complex confusing mess with far too many boards, sub-boards and unnecessary functionality, not to mention visually unattractive.

It would be lovely if someone far more skilled than I could create a Hive version, preferably stripped back to just the key functionality and more intuitive to use. It almost feels like the solution would be a way to have a separate site based on Threads where people could set up what were effectively Private Threads. Each Thread could then be made a permanent named object for replies to be added to, effectively replicating the sub-boards of Discord but with the advantage of being able to earn through upvotes.

I'm not sure if this is a crazy idea or not, but I just feel like we should be encouraging people to stay on Hive, not asking them to go to a Web2 place.

What do you think ?

If you're not familiar with SaturdaySavers, it's a fabulous initiative run by @shanibeer writing as @sally-saver on the @eddie-earner account, where we all support each other in getting to our savings goals.

If you are one of my friends reading this (or just someone who tripped over one of my posts), I really recommend this as a great community that's well worth joining.

I'm normally very disorganised about saving, and the support of the wonderful people in #SaturdaySavers has been invaluable in keeping me focused. I can honestly say that without it, my HP would probably be half what it is now.

So join ! You don't have to wait until the start of the year. The best time to start saving is ten years ago. The second best time is right now !

Heres hoping your last 4 weeks work out well ! For info, I've checked my LEO rewards from delegations (both HP and LEO delegations) and mine all look ok and up-to-date.
Best of luck for next week - keep on stacking !

Your growth still looks great to me, even if you're behind on a couple goals! You've achieved quite a lot!

The Hive-Engine node issues have been pretty intense for about a month and a half now. It actually broke a bunch of bots, both tipping and dividend-paying/payout versions. It took quite a while for many of them to be fixed, and some still have issues. I still don't know the actual reason why it happened, and continues to happen.

I agree with you regarding Discord, and for the same reasons. I'd infinitely prefer that functionality on Hive. The PeakD team did create the Sting Messenger, which is a step in the right direction, but it's still not used much for community communication.

I'm wishing you unstoppable success in smashing your year-end goals! Happy Friday! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Thank you ! I hadn't heard of Sting Messenger before now, I'll have to explore it :)

You're very welcome, absolutely! It's at the top-right of the PeakD interface. It used to be BeeChat, and now it's Sting! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Ah ! I just found it :) It looks like not many people are using it, but I adore the way it seamlessly ties in with Communities. Now I know it's there, I might start using it.

Also, I like how all the posts are public - it massively reduces the risk of creepers, weirdoes and scammers talking to people who might be vulnerable. True private PM's have their uses, but I've seen them abused far too often, so I'm really comfortable with this.

Excellent! Yes, it is curious that not many people use it yet. I think that part of the problem is that so many people are habituated to using Discord for most communication. It would take some community leaders to officially make the move over. I'm sure people would begin to follow suit.

Yes, I appreciate that too, and that's a good point for the reason for it, especially in anything crypto related! Have a beautiful weekend! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
