Sunrise and Sunset in Benidorm

A couple of weeks ago we went on holiday to Benidorm, in Spain. It's something we do most years as a reward to ourselves for surviving December and January.

Running a business in e-commerce, these are the busiest and most stressful months of the year, so I reckon it's only fair that we get a chance to unwind in February, which is normally the quietest month of the year.

We like Benidorm, it's a place we're familiar with and is a fun place to be. It's calmed down a bit over the last few years (probably something to do with people who went in their teens years ago are now in their 40's and 50's), but that's probably a good thing !

The weather was incredibly good this year, we were lucky. Every day was at least 10 degrees warmer than back home in England, it felt almost summery ! But one of the big advantages was that it also seemed to create some stunningly beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Most of these photos are the sunsets - it's still a bit of a party town, so we were only really up for sunrise on the last day, when we had to get up early to get to the airport.

I'm not going to claim to be a great photographer, and most of these shots were snaps with a mobile phone. One of two were taken virtually "blind"; I left my glasses in the hotel, so it was literally a case of point the camera in the right direction, hit the button and hope for the best 😀

Benidorm's coastline is shaped a bit like a sideways "W", with headlands at each end and a smaller one at the centre separating the two beaches (the Levante and Poniente). There's a small shelf-like island in the centre of the bay which is visible along the whole shoreline - the cafe there is one of the most expensive and grottiest I've ever come across !

We most stick to the Levante end of town, which has rather nice paving along the seafront from one end to the other. The locals like to promenade up and down it in the evenings. You can tell which ones are locals; nicely dressed, and wearing their winter coats. The English tourists tend to be scruffy and obese, as well as dressed for summer no matter what the weather is like.

These last two photos (below) are of the sunrise on the last day, looking out from our apartment balcony towards the island. The rather small waves you can see are about as rough as the sea gets, the town is quite sheltered and the Mediterranean doesn't have really high tides. I think I've only ever once seen it a little rougher, and it's certainly nothing like the Atlantic rollers or strong North Sea waves that are a normal day back in England !

We took plenty of other photos while we were there, mostly of the cats we met, so expect a few more Benidorm themed posts over the next few days !

All photos in this post were taken by me

Looks like a great spot! And its the same energy when we went to holidy in Betty's Bay.

We live on the West Coast where the Antarctic waters give us cold water all year round. People generally need wetsuits to stay in the water long. Then we went to the South Coast which is warm Indian Ocean and we were swimming and enjoying ourselves while the locals or other people from that area were standing on the shore wearing warm clothing. !LOL

It's a really nice place, and very friendly to the English (probably because English tourists spend a lot of money there...), although for some reason there were lots of Dutch there this time around.

The Old Town is full of shops, cafes & restaurants, and the New Town is where the nightlife happens, with loads of bars and live music And there are cats :)

I'm just writing one now 😁

I think it'll actually be a series of 3 posts.... we took a LOT of photos, and two of the cats definitely deserve some limelight of their own !

Greetings. A beauty of photographs and the story behind them. It certainly looks like a very serene and familiar place. I think my favorites have been the last two, the sunset, they evoke a very cozy feeling, like a postcard sent with love. Nice work, I liked it.

Thank you ! It was a fabulous holiday that we really, really needed. We were incredibly lucky with weather that was very warm for the time of year, and the amazing sunrises and sunsets that came with the weather were an added bonus 😀
