Worldbuilding Weekend Prompt #79 - Military Music

Welcome to the next in an ongoing series of writing prompts in the Worldbuilding community !

I'm aiming to post one of these each Sunday. They aren't a replacement for the excellent daily prompts from @worldbuilding they're just an extra opportunity if you have a writing itch you want to scratch. 😀

The prompt this week is - Military Music

In our world, mankind has been making military music since before history began. Joshua got his troops to blow trumpets as they marched around Jericho. It can inspire troops, help them march in step, and before the invention of the field telephone and radio was used to give signals that could be heard across the din of battle more clearly than voice commands. French Napoleonic voltigeurs were trained to shoot enemy drummers first to disrupt command and control (although they'd usually go for the officers first, all that braid and nice boots were worth a fortune !) Some of our best-known popular tunes are based on military marches, and Frederick the Great even composed some personally.

Tell me about military music in your setting ! Who composed the tunes ? What instruments are used ? Is the music made by individuals with instruments, or played by bands ? Is it played live, or transmitted over a ship or space cruiser's intercom ? Are bandmasters held in high esteem for their skill, or disdained as foppish popinjays ? Does it serve any unusual purpose, or use any strange instruments ?

Just to add a bit of spice to things, the two entries I most like (and are linked in comments to this post, so I can find them !) that are posted by midnight (GMT) next Saturday will each get a prize of one Hive SBI.

This link will take you to the FAQ where you can read more about Hive SBI - it's a project I thoroughly support because it gives both the donor and winner a steady trickle of passive income paid out in the form of upvotes on posts.

I stole these guidelines straight from @worldbuilding prompts (I hope that's okay !), I couldn't have written them any better myself....

  • Use the hashtag #worldbuilding
  • Prompt replies can be any length.

Some other neat communities for writing that you might want to check out are:

It can be a lot of fun to mix and match our prompts with some of these other community prompts.

This gives me flashbacks to my teen years. A family friend stayed with us for like three years with his boys and every morning he would wake us up with his trumpet playing the Reveille military tune. It was super annoying at the time but now 20 some years later I look back on it fondly.
