Worldbuilding Weekend Prompt #82 Endless Rain

avatar

Welcome to the next in an ongoing series of writing prompts in the Worldbuilding community !

I'm aiming to post one of these each Sunday (sorry, I'm a day late this week !). They aren't a replacement for the excellent daily prompts from @worldbuilding they're just an extra opportunity if you have a writing itch you want to scratch. 😀

The prompt this week is - Endless Rain

This prompt was mostly inspired by the weekend I just had, a Napoleonic re-enactment event where the main "feature" was a huge amount of rain which influenced every aspect of what we did.

But long-lasting rain is a feature of both myth and reality. In myth, there was the rain that led to some bloke called Noah going around collecting pairs of animals in a big boat. That led to another myth, that if it rains on St Swithin's Day (15th July), we'll get 40 days more of rain. Rain has influenced all kinds of historical events, as well. Battles like Agincourt and Waterloo would have ended very differently without the influence of rain. There are whole geological eras called Pluvials which are characterised by higher rainfall.

Tell me about long-lasting rain in your setting ! Is there a myth around it ? Is it part of the climate of an alien or colony world ? Do you use it to set the scene when you tell a story (think of Bladerunner, where the rain was a key element of scene-setting) ? What is the rain like - warm, cold, drizzly or a torrential downpour ?

Just to add a bit of spice to things, the two entries I most like (and are linked in comments to this post, so I can find them !) that are posted by midnight (GMT) next Saturday will each get a prize of one Hive SBI.

This link will take you to the FAQ where you can read more about Hive SBI - it's a project I thoroughly support because it gives both the donor and winner a steady trickle of passive income paid out in the form of upvotes on posts.

It can be a lot of fun to mix and match our prompts with some of these other community prompts.
