A weekend in Strasbourg // Un week-end à Strasbourg [EN/FR]
Hello friends!
A few weeks ago, @genesisledger celebrated his 25th birthday. And for the occasion, his parents organized a little surprise family weekend for us.
So on Saturday, we left at dawn (no I'm kidding, it was actually 7:45 in the morning but it wasn't light yet haha) towards the Gare de l'Est in Paris. We met up with the rest of the family there.
And once on the platform, we were finally able to discover our destination: Strasbourg!
We took a TGV and look at what was written on the window:
It means “Let yourself dream”, that was exactly what we needed to hear (or rather read).
We had a 2h30 journey to reach Strasbourg train station, and we were able to enjoy the scenery: fields, plains, vineyards, forests in autumn colors…
In short, after a 2h30 train ride, we arrived at our destination and were able to reach our hotel, located about twenty minutes away on foot. We dropped off our luggage and off we went to explore the city.
It was our first time here! (And my first time in the east of France)
We started by walking randomly through the streets of the city center.
Until we reached the cathedral square where the famous Notre Dame Cathedral of Strasbourg is located. And wow, what a cathedral! It is simply immense: 142 meters high according to Wikipedia. And its color is wonderful, it is made of pink sandstone (that's what gives it its pink color).
It is possible to climb it, that's what we did!
Look at the sign at the entrance:
I can confirm, climbing 330 steps was not easy (especially when you don't do much sport like me) but we succeeded and it was worth it. Here is the view from the top of the Cathedral:
We were also able to visit the interior of the Cathedral, it is truly magnificent. A quiet and well-maintained place, the stained glass windows are beautiful, we were amazed.
And we were able to attend a presentation of the Cathedral's astronomical clock. It is a very old clock created by famous mathematicians, technicians and clockmakers. It is a traditional clock, but it also indicates the phases of the Moon, eclipses, and the positions of the planets. It also displays a complete calendar. It represents the days of the week and indicates the sunrise and sunset times. And every noon, the automatons representing the Apostles start moving: they pass in front of Christ to receive his blessing.
It was really very interesting, we learned a lot about this clock, its creation and how it works. If you are in Strasbourg, do not miss this activity!
After that, we went to eat in a restaurant in the city center, a traditional restaurant that serves quality traditional dishes. @genesisledger chose the famous sauerkraut and I had bibeleskaes with potato pancakes and smoked salmon. It is a specialty made with fromage blanc seasoned with herbs and garlic. A real delight! All accompanied by a small Alsatian beer.
Then, we continued our little tour of the city. We visited the Petite France district:
The typical architecture of Alsace is really very pretty: the half-timbered houses with exposed beams, the colors, the rounded tiles... we love it!
While walking, we crossed several small bridges, which pass over the Ill (the river that crosses the city of Strasbourg). And we even walked along the water. It was really nice!
After having visited the city, we returned to the hotel to rest a little and enjoy the spa and wellness area of the hotel: swimming pool, hammam and sauna. Just what we needed to recharge our batteries.
In the evening, we went back to the city center to take a little night walk and go eat in a restaurant that offers very good flammekueches, I had the classic:
The temperatures were so pleasant that we were able to eat on the terrace outside at 10 p.m. in the middle of October, it's crazy right?
After eating well, we returned to the hotel to enjoy a very good night's sleep.
We had a very good day discovering Strasbourg. It's really quite a pleasant city. You could imagine living there.
And the next morning, after enjoying the hotel's good breakfast, we visited other parts of the city: the Place de la République and its park, the Jewish quarter, etc.
Anyway, if you've never visited Strasbourg, we really recommend you go. The atmosphere is unique and pleasant, it's quite exotic. By the way, do you know the famous Strasbourg Christmas market? It's an event not to be missed if you like the magic of Christmas! ❄️🎅🎄
See you soon,
Johanna

On pourrait s’imaginer y vivre.
À bientôt,
Johanna

Wow, I didn't know that the cathedral is so high - 142 meters, it's really impressive! And climbing 330 steps is also a feat, especially if you don't do sports, but the view from the top was definitely worth it. And this story with an astronomical clock that shows both the phases of the Moon and the movement of the apostles - I had no idea that it was so multifunctional😮
and also these thematic houses on the river, it's just magical🤩
The cathedral is truly impressive! Strasbourg is a very charming city, and I really liked the typical houses on the waterfront. Thanks for your comment 😊
it's the biggest pleasure if you guess with place for vacation 😄
along the way filled with a sense of peace because there are few vehicles and the sky is so blue without pollution.
