So do you have to play vs others in order to get ranking and rewards? Every time I go in I wait 5-10 minutes and no one shows up lol

Yes to enter the ranking you need to play with other players but the reward system is limited until the game is improved and being a testing and improvement phase there is not much incentive to play and that is also why there are few active players.
Generally on Saturday afternoon it is easier to find players ;)
Even if there are few active players it is a game that has potential in my opinion because it is fun to race the Kart
