Welcome folks this one has been long over due, it has been brewing in the old noggin for a while and we finally getting it out!

You may have a look above and think wow that is a nice AI generated image but you would be wrong, that is a picture that was taken of me moments after I finalized the Hive Bullion Exchange Precious Metal Integrity Index and was blessed by the precious metal verification gods, it was no biggie really just changing the game all over again, whats new 🤣

But yeah I honestly have been thinking about setting up a verification rating system so people could get into precious metals with more confidence and understanding, I have a passion for precious metals but only if they are real 🤣 and I don't want folks getting burned out here so I made this index to help with the effort, now unfortunately you will need tools for every single one of the test but the good news is that you can get to a moderate confidence level on the validity of the metal being tested with a fairly cheap set of tools.

Weight & Dimensions Check: 12 points
Sigma / Bulk Resistivity: 11 points
Density / Specific Gravity: 5 points
XRF Analysis: 7 points
Acoustic Resonance ("Ping"): 5-6 points
Magnetic Test: 5-8 points

90 - 99: Very High Confidence
75 - 89: High Confidence
60 - 74: Moderate Confidence
51 - 59: Low Confidence
50: Untested / Insufficient Data
1 - 49: Suspicious / High Risk

Explanations

The Index is fairly easy to use, you start with 50 and from there you conduct tests, if the test is a pass you add points if it is a fail you take away points, you should conduct as many test as you can , if you conduct every test and they all pass you would get a score of 99, this is intentional as even with all that some god tier fake could still potentially pass all those test maybe something that is almost fully pure, but fear not the economics of producing such fakes makes them unprofitable on consumer scale precious metals.

Like I mentioned in the fluff section I tried to make the system solid but also accessible so with a basic magnet, some calipers and a scale one can get up to a score of 68 in the Moderate Confidence category.

And here I will get into the basics of each test and why I gave them the points I did, keep in mind the points are arbitrary and only have a use within the context of this index.

Weight & Dimensions Check: 12 points

The tools for this test are fairly cheap, you need calipers and a scale and also an official reference for the coins specifications, however this may not always be available when that is the case this test can't be conducted.

Sigma / Bulk Resistivity: 11 points

The sigma metalytics machine is a fairly powerful metal verification tool however it can be a bit on the expensive side, there are several machines the company sells at different price points but they all work the same way comparing the resistance properties of a metal being sampled to built in data base. it also has a built in magnetic test as ferrous metals will be rejected.

Density / Specific Gravity: 5 points

This test requires a scale, ideally a specific gravity scale however a DIY solution is possible to create fairly easily that utilizes a normal scale, this test works fairly well on solid samples but things with more complicated or hollow geometry would not be suitable for this test (this is mostly more related to testing jewelry) and one should not have issues with bars, coins or rounds

XRF Analysis: 7 points

This is a very expensive piece of equipment and surprisingly it is not very reliable it more or less gives a surface reading be it a very precise one with the exact breakdown of the composition, I dreamed of one day owning an XRF but I seen first hand how it is far from perfect and a sufficient plating can give you a pass

Acoustic Resonance ("Ping"): 5-6 points

This one is a bit tricky, the tool required is relatively cheap, My own Hive Bullion Exchange offers the cheapest version I know of a pinger link here There are also some other folks that sell them but they are a bit more expensive but still relatively cheap, this test on it's own gives a 5 however when it is pair with an app that can listen to the resonance and evaluate it against a know data base you can assign 6 points, there are already some solutions out there but they are still lacking, I am currently working on an improved system and with it this test can be more certain.

Magnetic Test: 5-8 points

This one is also tricky, as there 2 prominent magnetic testing methods one is just a raw magnet and you see if it is attracted to the sample this gives you a score of 5 if it appears to not be magnetic however it is important to keep in mind there are other base metals that are non ferrous meaning gold, silver are not the only metals that will not be attracted to magnets.

With the use of a magnetic slide the diamagnetic properties of gold, silver and cooper and the paramagnetic properties of platinum can be easily seen as they will slide down slower down the slide as apposed to other non ferrous metals this would give you a score of 8. I also have some slides for sale but not listed on the exchange yet, so you would need to reach out to if you want to buy one but you can also order one from others however their price will be higher.

I have some ideas on taking this test to the next level but that there is still a lot of R&D that I must conduct before I can create it.

Closing notes

As mentioned above the points assigned are somewhat arbitrary and only work within this index, when I get around to making the improved versions of the test I will make another version of this chart for those that have these 2 new and improved metal verification systems.

This index is intended for those new to precious metals or those that are not comfortable sorting out metal verification on their own or those that don't want to bother making their own evaluation system but I invite you all to try and learn as much as you can about the tests you are using.
