1925 Silver Standing Liberty Quarter

In my last post about silver, I mentioned picking up some quarters for my two sons. I'm working to get them interested in silver and gold. The quarters I picked up weren't anything special since it's just to get them started. When I have them come with me to my local coin store, I'll have them pick out what they like.

As you can see, these are just standard George Washington design, pre-1965 quarters. I had to explain to my sons that each of these quarters costs about $6 compared to modern quarters with no silver in them.

As I was looking through the box of 90% US quarters and half dollars, I noticed a Standing Liberty Quarter and had to grab it. The cost was the same, but this one has a crisp date from 1925.

SLQ's are harder to find in and of themselves. Finding one with a date is even rarer. While this particular date isn't anything special, I still had to grab it. It's a very unique design, and this coin is 100 years old! Most coins in this date range don't have a visible date anymore because of all the wear from circulation and silver being a soft metal.

As an interesting side note, both of these quarters are considered "Type 2". The "Type 1" design had a bare right breast on Lady Liberty and caused such an uproar that the design was changed to cover her exposed breast.

Since more and more people have begun selling off some of their stack, I plan to frequent my local coin store more often to try and find more pieces like this.
