A Boy and His Dog

It's funny looking back at the paths life takes you down and where you end up. I lost my cat of 17 years back in 2022. My wife lost her cat October of last year. We thought we'd wait and get a dog for the boys, but would wait a little bit for there to be some healing.

Fast forward to December of last year, and I caught my wife super focused on her phone after the kids had gone to bed. I asked what she was doing, and she told me she was looking at dogs. I was surprised but happy it was a sign her heart was healing.

She showed me a picture of the dog she was interested in adopting. The dog was absolutely adorable and sweet. A family was looking to adopt her out. We inquired about her, but someone else beat us to contacting them. A couple of weeks went by and she was contacted by them. It didn't work out with the previous person. We met at the park near us, and before we knew it we were taking our new dog, Sage, home with us!

Oddly enough she bonded the most with me, and I had never owned a dog before now. She was cute and knew it, and would find a way to occasionally be allowed up on the couch to snuggle with me. Lately, she's also started bonding with my oldest son.

I was pleasantly surprised by this since the idea was for her and the boys to make some great memories as they all grew up together. She has even gotten to the point where about 60-70% of the time she will take commands from him, like sitting, bringing him a ball for her to play fetch, and even to get up on the couch with him like you saw in the previous picture.

Sage is an absolute sweetheart and does well with everyone. We were shocked when we were out on a walk and she went up to a neighbor's Siberian Husky and calmly started sniffing without incident. She's very protective of us when she's in the house, and will bark at cats, people she sees walking their dog, delivery drivers, etc., but she was calm and collected on our walk.

We're looking forward to many more years with her as part of our family, and I can't wait to see all the fun our kids and her will have together. I especially look forward to seeing the bond between her and the boys become even stronger over time.

She's a really cute dog. Dogs are awesome, and I miss having one. It's much easier to travel without pets though, that's why I haven't adopted a new one.

Thanks! Yeah, traveling is a challenge. We'll likely have to check her into a pet hotel of sorts for when we go on vacation. First World problems, right? 😆
