My Two Year Old Killed Our TV

We've been telling our youngest son for months, "no throw" and similar phrases. He's in that stage where he's still figuring out his emotions, but he understands the majority of what we tell him.

I'm filling up the tub to soak because my shoulder has been bugging me, and my wife comes in and tells me our youngest son broke the TV. She said she was only gone for a moment. Oddly enough, I wasn't angry. Irritated, sure, but not mad at all.

I inspected the damage and most of the screen is unwatchable.

I promptly told my wife, "We're not buying another one." It's not that we're poor. I could buy one today if I wanted, but since my youngest son just demonstrated he has no issue destroying a perfectly good TV, why should I put down $500+ for him to do it again?

This is where parenting gets interesting. If the kids ask to watch TV, I'll still let them. The TV's current predicament, however, will be a lasting reminder to them to be careful with their possessions.

I'm sure I'll eventually replace it, but I'm in no hurry. I don't get to watch much TV except for a couple of hours after the kids go to bed. I have a phone, tablet and a laptop I can use if I'm that desperate to watch TV.

I had money set aside to buy a new receiver and start upgrading the sound system, but I think I'll be buying myself a 1/4oz of gold instead, since I see no point buying new things, only for them to be destroyed. Oh well. Maybe in the next few years I'll get a new TV.

Damn😅

That’s actually good parenting. Most kids these days destroy things and still get cheered or new stuff. Cousine of a friend got an iPhone 15 for her Birthday but not the pro. (She’s 13…) So she destroyed it. 3 days of dispute and a sorry with sad looking eyes and she got the 15 Pro. I am really interested in how she will behave in 5 or 10 years 😅

Are you serious? I'd be making that kid get a part time job to pay it back!

I'm sure she'll be even worse as an adult.

Man, thank you for the lesson. Certainly, I will learn your way, at least to let my son know the consequences if he ever destroys things. Just a little bit more into that stage. hehe

Hopefully he doesn't, or at least do something like that. 😆

My daughter wasn’t 2 when she did it, but the same thing happened in my house. But my daughter did it with a Nintendo Wii controller, I think she was 6. We told her constantly to keep the strap around your wrist because it could fly out of your hand.
Buy the quarter ounce of gold.👍
Well…. It did and destroyed the tv. My ex wife lost her mind. I told her why bother, she now has no tv to watch.
Like you I rarely watched tv, so it went years like that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one not wanting to bother replacing it. I appreciate the support and advice!

I think we went two years without the tv downstairs.

That is an excellent lesson to teach the kids. We did it the exact same way, and haven't had a problem since.

Nice centering on the shot, though. Perhaps a game of Cricket?

We're certainly hope it gets the point across.

Supposedly, he hit it with a toy train. 🤦‍♂️

Exactly, I'd have my kids sit and watch a broken TV for a week or two just to drive the point home, that irresponsible actions have real consequences. Maybe Ham it up a bit coming home an hour later from work having to work 'overtime'. Another unintended consequence.

I tried it today and my two year old wasn't phased by it, but I suspect it's because he was enjoying the sound and music. I muted it and he lost interest. !LOL

Two years old. Can't pull the "Daddy can't take you to the ball game because he has to pay for the TV before..."

Ah this brings back memories. At the time we lived in an apartment and one of the sliding doors had frosted glass panes. One day when he was throwing a tantrum, our youngest, 2-years old at the time, threw the iPad into the door, shattering all the glass.

We had the glass man come and replace it. A few weeks later, both kids were fighting and something was thrown and... yeah, again.

Fun times.

Oh, no! 😱

I'm sorry, that sucks, and I'm sure that wasn't cheap, considering you had to replace it twice! 😣

It will be a lesson remembered for a long time, I bet.
I have to say that the header image looks like a piece of art, you should Print it and put it up the wall, or NFT it as a reminder for your son what he did being a 2 year old. With the story that daddy wasn't going to buy a new one anytime soon.

Nevertheless, it sucks! I'd be not happy either and I'm so pleased that it never happened to us that our daughter broke a tv. She almost broke a perfectly new set of speakers by pressing in the part that moves though, which almost seemed broken even before it was used once.. I don't know how you call that part, sorry, I hope you get it..
