Oops, We Broke It!

I enjoy technology. It has many benefits and improves our lives. Sure, it makes some people lazy and near-helpless, but that's not the case with everyone.

It also appears to make some people careless. Those in "IT" seem to take systems and software, incorporate them all together, and try to play a game of chicken with disaster while trying to keep everything running smoothly. Then they act surprised when it fails. When asked how much testing was done, it's usually minimal, and there was no backup or failsafe in the event it failed.

(Created with Bing)

I've seen cell phones crash because a new update suddenly monopolizes all available memory, so you can't run more than one app at a time. Battery power for a phone goes from lasting a day to just a few hours with almost no usage.

I've seen an entire system freeze up because Microsoft cloud-based products froze, so the whole system had to be rebooted, and all information was lost. I've had tablets I had to factory reset because the new update made it so you couldn't get past the lock screen.

I miss the days when it seems people prepared for things to possibly go wrong, rather than assume everything would go smoothly. It seems that lately, those in charge of rolling out software updates don't take the end user into consideration or simply assume they'll get over the issues and inconveniences they caused. To some degree, that's true because many don't have alternatives, or the cost of switching to a competitor isn't worth all of the extra effort, but that's a terrible mindset to have, and terrible way to run a business.

I'm curious if you've had similar experiences lately, frustrations with technology, or maybe you've been more fortunate and seen some success?

As things become more complex we end up with possibilities that things can go wrong

Hello fren there are many benefits if you start making your posts via the inleo.io front end.
Some of the benefits include

  • Earn $LEO tokens - Every type of content is allowed InLeo, and they can post to every community and earn $leo tokens. If they post to the leofinance community from another frontend, they won't earn $leo over and above the hive based on the votes.

Part of it is sheer complexity, making it impossible to test for everything until something goes live. Some companies (like Apple) try to limit this by ending support for their products after 7 years (well, it used to be 7 years. They might have expanded it due to pressure recently), but with a company like MS that tries to maintain support for everything, well, they are kind of handing their software division an impossible task when it comes to to testing updates. Given how complex everything has become, frankly I'm surprised we don't see more major problems.

Also, some companies are better than others. Apple generally does pretty well with updates. Microsoft has more problems, but still overall does ok. But when we move to Android... so often disasters follows updates. But to their credit, there are so many phones and configurations and companies.. it is even more complex than the Windows ecosystem.

This is true. I don't fault the people who are caught in the middle, tasked with designing the update. Sure, they can't test for everything, but you'd think at least one of them would have a backup they could push put to revert things back, until they've fixed the issues with the new update.

Agreed, there should be a backup before any update and that backup should automatically be restored in the case of failure. Having worked in IT once upon a time, I can tell you many corporate people always vetoed me on backups, saying they waste time and resources. But I did them anyway.

A bigger problem is how now everything is a computer but many places haven't adapted to any good practices for upgrades. A few weeks ago I read about a Ford truck update that bricked one guy's car so he couldn't use it at all until they factory restored the entire car system. Talk about a failure!

haha, yes sometimes when they push the update, things just went south. Maybe the lack of testing as you said.

You gotta love technology, especially Microsoft bugs and updates that just don't work. Pain in the ass is what they are!
