Is that a black soldier fly per chance? Nice pics, I think you captured it's very essence in these images. If you think they look like assassins wait until you see a 50X pic of them: true monsters, the stuff of nightmares.

I liked the way the pitch black background condensed the mental focus onto the fly.

I don't think it is a black soldier fly, but certainly one if the species from the soldier fly genera. Yes they are very beautiful, but also very scary at the same time.
