Memories of a Future That Never Existed!

What is madness? What is the state of mind that goes with somebody being declared insane? What are the conditions that are met when we think to ourselves "that person is a bit off their rocker!"

It's hard to say sometimes! I've heard it said that if you are actually able to consider the possibility that you might be crazy, chances are you're not!

There are moments when I find that comforting.

Sometimes it feels like I slide in and out of this reality in which we live. At least, my mind wanders off of what is in front of me and I'm given to explore memories and images inside my memory banks.

What I find there sometimes doesn't make sense. When I say it doesn't make sense, it doesn't make sense in the same way as we might wake up from a dream that seemed really weird and surreal and think to ourselves "nothing I just experienced made sense!"

The human mind is a strange and mysterious and occasionally wondrous place!

Have you ever had a thought that feels overwhelmingly like a memory, even though the content of that thought has no bearing on anything that has ever happened in your life, and moreover has no bearing on anything that even exists in this world and time?

And afterwards, you sit and wonder. I find myself sitting and wondering why I know what it feels like to walk around in low gravity, for example. My "knowing" this is on equal footing with my knowing how to ride a bicycle... even if I don't have one right now so I can prove it to you.

Even weirder, I find myself wondering why I have what feels like memories of space travel advanced far beyond anything we know now that is so clear it stands above many things I knowto be actual memories.

I usually keep these musings to myself, because... well... I don't need to be certified as a nutcase.

But what makes us nutjobs? The fact that we think of things beyond car repair and when to get our curtains dry cleaned?

I wrote most of the science fiction novella in the mid-1980s. In the world I described - which was more or less timeless - everybody carried around something that looked about like an iPhone looks today except it was capable of doing a whole lot more than what a current iPhone can do. I described it in great detail in 1985. I'm going to take a stab at the possibility that maybe the iPhone 28 will be able to do what I was writing about.

A lively imagination? A strong ability to predict? Or something else?

And why commit brainspace to something that not only doesn't exist, but has no chance of existing until long after my death?

As I said above, the human mind is a strange and mysterious thing.

Oh, I imagine we will eventually get there! Let's face it, Apple loves to introduce new products all the time, and their biggest fans are always standing by to buy the newest and the best. It would not surprise me at all if we had iPhone 28 by the year 2030.

Was Isaac Asimov a certified nutcase who was a bit off his rocker too?

Yes, I'm pretty sure our friend Isaac was a nutcase by most people's reckoning!

And that video? That's just somebody who has a great hobby!

Thank you! And it would not surprise me at all if the sequence of iPhones make it all the way to 28!
