Sunday Reflection: All in All, I'd Rather Be Gardening!

Sometimes, I find myself wondering whether the whole idea of "retirement" came about because people reached an age where they were just sick and tired of working, and realized that they'd rather be gardening... or writing poetry... or learning to paint ceramics... or something like that.

Of course, being a slightly slothly individual, I must confess that I have been "sick and tired of working," almost since the very beginning when I started to do so!

But what makes people sick and tired of working?

Are we ultimately just inclined to be lazy and not do much? Or is it more likely that we feel like the "reward" for what we do is not commensurate with the amount of effort we have to put forth?

I was thinking about this particular conundrum as I recognized that I was far happier about the discovery that the final group of potatoes we laid have started sprouting than I am about having completed yet another day of eBay listings.

New potatoes? Yeah, homegrown fresh food! Plus I get to see something tangible result from our efforts.

eBay listings? Tedious, and even after hours of effort, unlikely we'll see any returns, anytime soon... because, who cares? (Truth in disclosure... keep doing this because it's one of the few chances we have of being able to pay our bills)

I used to be quite enthusiastic about being an eBay merchant... perhaps because I felt like my efforts actually were leading to something. I'm not so sure, anymore... but the thought of having to "reinvent myself" one more time is exhausting and overwhelming.

Meanwhile, crypto being in the toilet at the moment isn't helping my mood!

On the upside... yesterday was Mrs. Denmarkguy's birthday, and we managed to have a semi-relaxing day, at least!

I'm pretty used to weekends being worktime, along with the remainder of the week. Such is life of the self-employed!

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week ahead!

I think retirement is like the treat you get for eating up all your greens. We need some incentive to spend the best part of our lives doing something we don't want to. When I was young I could never have imagined I'd get such satisfaction from growing food and up to 3 years ago, I had never even had my hands in the soil. Perhaps we're all born to be gardeners:)

Many people seem to be just burned out by retirement age. My husband wore his body out so much while working, he isn't able to enjoy retirement the way he'd like to. I think we should retire when we get out of college, have fun for 20 years, and then go to work.

Nothing wrong with being a little slothly! I think we get stuck in the mindset of 'having' to work, which takes away all enjoyment, we end up in a routine of working to live, grinding away those 'valuable years' of our lives! A happy belated birthday to Mrs D.
