The Heatwave Reminds me Why I Used to Feel so Tired, All the Time!
It has been really hot here in western Washington for the last couple of days.
Well, by our standards it has been really hot with the afternoon high today hitting 88° (31C for the metric folks). I realize that's practically nothing in many parts of the world, but around here it's plenty hot... particularly given that none of our houses are designed to keep heat out; they're designed to keep heat in due to our cool winters.
It's funny how quickly I've gotten used to living in these much cooler temperatures after living in Texas for 20 years where 100° (38C) in the afternoon was quite common. Now it gets up to 80 and I'm complaining as much as the next person!
Somehow I think it's difficult to acclimatize to something too different from what we grew up with... at least that has held true for me.
But this is not a post about the weather.
One of the byproducts I've noticed of it being the so warm is that I find myself being both tired and sleepy all the time and it reminded me that I felt tired and sleepy during the years I lived in Texas, a lot of the time.
Of course, down there we had air conditioning — which we don't have here — but even so it seemed like constantly dealing with the high temperatures always burned a lot of energy for me... and I just want to lie down and sleep till it was over, much like bears hibernate in the winter, up here in the north.
Today, I'm grateful that at least our house is built into a hillside which means the "inside" rooms on our lower level tend to stay cool all the time even when it's very hot outside. And thankfully my home office — from where I'm writing these words — is part of that downstairs area of the house!
Meanwhile, our cats don't seem to mind the sun and the heat too much; they're actually laying in the upstairs living room and often in the sun during these hot afternoons!
To be honest, I don't think I could go back to living in a hot climate. I just don't do well as soon as the temperature gets up to about 75 or so.
I there was a time (many years ago) when my parents were hopeful I'd want to take over their house in the Phoenix, AZ area after they passed away, but I never had any interest in living in a desert climate. I'll take our (usually) cool damp climate, any day!
And now, I think I will follow the example of our cats and get some sleep!
Thanks for visiting, and have a great remainder of your week!

I guess cats can cope in any kind of weather and that is why the heat is not really telling on them
Your pictures are so nice
I know here in New England this summer the humidity has been stuck above 90% most of the time and when the temps get into the mid 80's or higher, it's really hard to function. I find it exhausting.
I have never enjoyed hot weather, not even when I was a child. The older I get,the narrower my window of comfort becomes. If the temperature goes above 70, it's too warm out in the sunshine for me. If it goes below 40, I start coughing. We have had plenty of 90+ degree days this summer, and even hit 100 a time or two. Not my idea of a good time.
