You are so awesome with your kids and passing on your love for animals. Love them box turtles. They are cool. We had one we rescued in VA while on a weekend getaway once to the Patrick Henry home place. Found him on a road, didn't know where to take him so just brought him home and had him for a couple years. Of course we called him Patrick. Not the best thing to do I know, but the oldest son who was little at the time wanted some responsibility so we let him try to take care of him. He was successful for a couple years until it got sick and finally passed.
Ya we let him go down here by the creek so he has plenty of food :)

Box turtles are one of the coolest to find in nature. They say to move it to the side of the road where it was trying to get to if you stop to help it. If you ever find one with a damaged skull to take it to a veterinarian for help as their outer shell is a rib cage, and spine, vertebrae, and sternum all in one. I read about veterinarians repurposing bra hooks to glue and fix broken turtle shells. A slow, painful death happens if a turtle's shell is damaged beyond repair and its not taken to a vet to be put out of its misery.
