Today I learned what consequences post-tags can have

Today I learned that the usage of tags has consequences I did not realize before.

What happened

A few days ago I discovered this nice little corner of hive at www.sloth.buzz. The humor I encountered seemed right up my alley so I started posting there. Nothing topic specific, a true daily blog.

One of my posts sparked a conversation in comment section with the community main account which lead to the following comment

image.png

Stupid me, I thought he checked my account and noticed I was also doing Actifit and posting in there. All further explanation I put in my reply

image.png

Getting that activity count up is not a problem when I am working "on the floor" and I wanted to earn some extra tokens that way. My daily updates are not that exciting so I decided to keep these things out of my blog feed as not to upset anyone, they might consider it spam. It would just appear in the actifit community, that is its purpose.

And so for me that topic was closed.

I tagged too much

The moment of realization came when I was using the slothbuzz front end and stumbled upon this post on the main page:

image.png

Oh what the frack? How did that get there?

The reason: I added the slothbuzz tag to my actifit postings.

Ooops

So that means it will also appear on the front ends of alive and proofofbrain.

I am sorry! I did not know!

Why I did it

So at some point in my hive life I realized that adding certain tags to a post can earn you second layer tokens. The first such token I encountered was POB from ProofOfBrain. Then came other ones like VYB, PIMP, ONEUP, PGM, the list goes on.

The latest were ALIVE and now slothbuzz.

I just wanted to earn those extra tokens. Simple as that.

Topic Tags

Ah yes, I am aware of topic tags. I use them appropriately. At least I think so. Would not surprise me if I get another "Oh shoot!" moment in a few days realizing a bad habit.

I add the meme tag for memes, the lego tag for lego postings and so on.

I was aware that people excplicitely search for topic tags for their reading. I do so as well.

Different front ends

And this I did not know: Adding the tag of a front end like proofofbrain.io or sloth.buzz will make the post show up on that frontend. Just like that, no further search needed.

Open their page, directly under "new posting": My 5 second old post with the corresponding tag.

Lesson learned

So next time I post an Actifit report card: No more other tags. Even though having an activity count might proof that I am alive, it does not add value to that community and their front end.

And while the sloths do definitely not want to know how active I can be, the ProofOfBrain community might even question me having a brain at this point.

Redeem myself

I hope this epiphany did not come too late. Yes, I will tag this post again but I think in this case it is ok. It looks like I have a brain after all and I am still alive.

And a sloth I can be from time to time, no question about that. I definitely like the humor there.

So from now on only those tags in which community front end I want to be seen.

I hope that those who considered me spamming their front ends forgive me.

Best wishes for the weekend.

Hannes

hehe this is quite brilliant!
Sloths don't do fitness hehe this post gt me chuckling.
On a serious not misuse of tags can get you muted etc etc, so yeah always be careful what you post, how you tag it, and where you post it!

Hehe, got me smiling at first, too :-)

I got a "you got muted" notice about two weeks ago from a single account (ecency shows such a thing, peakd does not). Was my first such notice and I was wondering "why? what did I do?". Could not figure out the reason and decided to wait for a little while if others follow on that, maybe then the reason becomes apparent. Did not happen so I put it in the "can not please them all" corner of my thinking.

Anyway, all that put together, I will revisit my tags now. Prepare a better list for the regular topics I post in and when to use which tag.

Thank you, you are very welcome.

Welcome to hive, an exciting place with lots of features. And as you can see, we can learn from each other something new every day. :-)

Tags are crazy here! I have a number that I use and rarely deviate from because... well... for about the reasons that you list here. Definitely a good lesson to learn! And no harm done.

Yep, It is one of the things I need to get better organized on. Researching those tags I can safely add for tokens and making a list for my most common topics which tags to add.

Thanks for the kind words. :-)

If the sloths sincerely don’t want actifit content showing up they can exclude posts with that tag, if they choose to.

Oh, I did not know that. Something new to be learned every day :-)
Thank you.

That's totally right, and worth noting for Hivians learning their way. Some frontends actually exclude their own tags strangely enough. At slothbuzz, we don't actively exclude anything, our comment was given with some humour, thankfully Hannes also took it this way.

Although we don't actively exclude anything, we can offer suggestions toward what our community prefers to see, otherwise, it's a waste of one of your 10 tags which could potentially provide a better reward elsewhere. And, many of the Hive communities have a more strict policy when it comes to "tag abuse". We know Hannes had no intentions of abusing anything, and would not apply that term to this encounter.

Hehe, we're glad you took it with a pinch of salt, Sloth's love fun and memes as you know from joining our community! Our frontend isn't too specific, we're pretty open to all posts so don't exclude anything.

We too had some tag issues upon starting our Hive-ing, so I think it's great to learn and understand. Hive is a very complex place with a steep learning curve as you delve into it. No harm done on our side, hopefully, we don't get inundated with fitness posts, or we may have to join a gym or something!

We sincerely accept your apology and wish you a very Buzz-y fitness routine ahead!

!LOL
Yeah, I'm actually glad I learned it this way and not in a harmful way by suddenly getting muted in a community or worse even landing on some downvote list for abuse.

So yeah, no harm done and thankful for the lesson.

And a lesson learned by experience is worth more than just being told. Because the more I think about it the more I realize I must have read about this a few times already in some "what (not) to do" posts when I started.

And as far as my experience on hive goes, so far people were always kind enough to tell me when I did something wrong (for the first time) and give the chance for improvement.

So all in all a very nice place to be. :-)

Yeah we've found Hive to be a great place to set some roots and build up a community, I think we're all learning daily as we should be! Hive is an awesome place to build, both technically and socially. Keep buzzin!

Oh right I never know until someone called me out on what I did wrong
I have hand written notes of tags I use sometimes on my post

Oh that's a good idea.
I was thinking of creating a list in a text file or excel sheet.
But a prepared list is the way to go I think.
At the moment I'm still adding them manually every time I post and sometimes I don't use the appropriate or miss one/two.
Definitely have to get better organized in that regard.

Thanks for a fun and informative post! I had no idea there could be worse repercussions for using the wrong tags than that someone writes an angry comment.

It typically starts with a comment. As far as I experienced so far, people on hive first tell you if/what you did wrong and give you a chance to do better. That's one of the beauties of this place.

But it is equally important to act on that mistake and actually learn from it. 😉

And the best way is to avoid them mistakes in the first place 😋

Glad I could help.

I still don't know how to make use of tags.
I just use the few I am used to.
There are a lot to learn here on hive.

It's a continuous learning process, I just made the mistake of stopping that.
You're also here since Jan '22 (just like me) and I think you're doing fine.
As mentioned many times before, lot of people tell you what/if there's a mistake/blunder to (community) rules and give time and chance to rectify the situation.

Just like happened with me. That simple comment, meant in a fun way, was eventually enough to make me start learning again.

So don't worry too much (just a little bit to keep learning) and enjoy the fun ride :-)

Excellent post, indeed sometimes you make mistakes with the labels, it is always good to read carefully the rules of the communities so that we are not labeled as spam.
Have a nice day.

Thank you very much.
I agree, checking the rules is important. Every community has its own guidelines and rules, some are more strict and others more lose.

Have a nice day as well

I have learned a lesson too. Using appropriate tag in a pod is important and also follow each community guide on what they want in there community.

Indeed. And funny enough, now that I was just sensitized to that topic I noticed similar posts by other users where there before me (hahaha, I'm never first in anything) I just had not come across one of those before.

And I figure this is a daily experience for new and old users, one day it just sneaks up on you and some of them make a post out of it.

After all, it's a HIVE experience worth posting about (imho).

Thanks for stopping by and glad you found it helpful.

There are so many possible tags, and so many
communities/front-ends, that it's challenging to keep them all straight! I appreciate you sharing what you learned in this process! I'm still refining and tweaking what tags I use on what posts! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
