TTT: German Hardrock - Country

It is time for another #ThreeTuneTuesday. For those not familiar with it, here's an explanation.

They call themselves Kärbholz, a deliberate misspelling of the German word for tally-stick.

In German the word Kerbholz (in its correct spelling) has a dark denotation, it is mostly used in the idiom "Etwas auf dem Kärbholz haben" - "To have something on the tally stick" which means in hard terms someone did time in prison or in softer context someone did something wrong.

I learnt of this band a few years ago with the song "Überdosis Leben" - "(I want) an overdose (of) life".

They appear in the image of hard rockers (who did time, even though they themselves did not as far as I know, hence their name) but their songs are mostly about enjoying life to the best we can.

The song "Perfekt unperfekt" - "Perfect unperfect" is about how two people acknowledge and admire the faults of the other.

And in some wicked turn of the phrase that makes them perfect for each other.

What a perfect song for a karaoke event to be sung by a couple in love. And even in its original version there is seldom a party at which no one starts singing along to this song.

After I heard these two songs I was enthusiastic about this band. And they managed to entangle me even more with their ballad "Kind aus Hinterwald" - "backwood kid".

I grew up on the countryside in a small village in the middle of West-Germany, close (very very close) to the iron curtain. The first decade of my life we were able to play soccer on the streets on Sundays because there was no traffic. After all, the end of the world (as we knew it) was less than 2 miles away.

My 20's and 30's I mostly lived in big cities until I finally settled again in a small village at the north west coast, I got that idyllic life of my childhood back and can now pass it on to my son.

This song, even though it is very young compared to the memories it provokes, reminds me of that time.

I like how they mix things up between hard rock, making it a duet, and a soft country ballad. They are really great to listen to when I sit in my backyard with a little fire burning on a warm summer evening.
