TTT: True Fun-Metal is in Pink!

It is time for another #ThreeTuneTuesday. For those not familiar with it, here's an explanation.

About 86 Weeks ago @ablaze started this incredible movement:

Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs which I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Or why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and hopefully upvote it. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music.

Four metal fans come together to form a band. They start doing cover songs but get bored so they decide to tune the lyrics a little bit. And why only cover metal songs? Why not turn other songs into metal versions? But wait, there's more. The drummer has (for some unknown strange reason) a pink drum kit. And there's not enough money to buy one with another color. Ok, that might be the reason why it is pink in the first place...

Many more miles north, then living somewhere in the middle of Germany, a nine year old listens to Queen's "We are the champions" and is fascinated by the music. As a native German speaker with only very little education in English language or culture he does not understand what the song is all about. Champions... Funny word, looks and sounds like "Champignon". That's the mushroom dad always has on his pizza.

Only two years later, it all comes together.

JBO is a German "Fun-Metal" band. The pink color quickly became a main part of their brand. They cover all kinds of songs, turn them into metal and put funny (mostly German) lyrics to them based on puns/false-friends or other themes.

One of their first songs is a cover of Queen's "We are the Champions" in which they rewrote the lyrics so it is actually about the mushroom champignons now.

Many more cover songs follow, JBO became somewhat the German version of Weird Al Yankovic but lots more metal style.

For most of the English songs they cover, they look for similar sounding German words or so called false friends (e.g. champions - champignons) to give the theme.

Pet Shop Boys's "Go West" was turned into "Ein Fest" (A Party/Ferstival).

For this one, if you do not want to listen to the introduction, please skip to 1:50 minutes.

When this song came out, we were allowed to drink, it was around the turn of the century and there were a lot of parties.

The song itself is about having a party ("Ein Fest"), about drinking beer, how the music is so loud that the police shows up only to join the party and (since they are still sober) they are send off to get more beer.

So of course we all knew the lyrics by heart and it was played more than once on every party.

Almost 30 years after they started, they were ready to admit what they are doing.

"Alles nur geklaut" - "It's all just a knockoff" was originally a song by the German band "Die Prinzen" from 1993. Yet JBO took their sweet time to do this obvious cover.

Maybe it was for the best because all the years of experience and success are truly visible in the production.

Among their many successful (cover) songs they also published a few originals. These are very good German (fun) metal songs also often played at parties and today I will break the pattern and include a bonus track, their main theme "Verteidiger des wahren Blödsinns" (Defender of true nonsense):

If you understand some German und need a smile on your face, as a metal fan, put on a random JBO song and just start smiling. 😊

Thank you for reading and listening.

Keep on rocking 🤘

This makes me wish even more than before that I knew any German! Despite not understanding the words, I certainly could appreciate the music. Thanks for sharing these! Very fun to listen to!

Thank you.
Oh right, Electric Callboy... I think @inthenow had a #ttt about them once. They're definitely more like Al Yankovic than JBO. Even though a German band they sing in English, that's why I forgot they're a German band. ;-)

If you want to discover more German Bands, that's my current theme for quite a few weeks now. Would be honored if you check out my older postings. :-)

Quality, these guys are a lot of fun to listen too and I love that they were just three random metal fans who came together and soon they were selling out huge concerts!

Yes, excellent party music (especially if you know some German). At least for my generation :-)

And isn't that every hobby-band's dream? Having fun making music and all of a sudden you fill complete halls? And they are so nice to talk to, I had the pleasure in 1999, after a concert they just joined the crowd for a beer.

Enjoy the other posts :-)
