Martyr is Unbalanced : 7 Rulesets to use with Martyr for insane results! Poison, Born Again / Resurrect, Earthquake, Opportunity, Snipe, Fire and Regret.

One Ability to rule them all

Of all the new abilities to come into Splinterlands this year I have had most of my success with Martyr. For anyone battling to grasp this ability, I'll explain how it works and when it should be used!

THE BASICS : Every time a Monster with Martyr dies, it boosts the cards next to it with +1 Stats in Damage, Speed, Life and Armour (if applicable). In certain Rulesets these abilities can seriously boost your lineup, as you plan on your Martyr Monsters to die and work out which of your cards should get the Stat Boosts!

Here are the Rulesets I tend to use Martyr Monsters in, relying on them to die and increase the Stats of the cards surrounding them :

• Poison Battles (to boost your Immune Monster/s)
• Earthquake Ruleset (to boost you Flier/s)
• Born Again + Resurrect (double or triple the Martyr boost)
• Opportunity (force the opposition to take down your Martyr Monsters)
• Fire and Regret (strategically take down your own Martyr Monster/s)
• Snipe (works well with a Martyr Monster in position 2)

The Website Splinterrents is a great Resource to use to check which Cards have which abilities. Below you can see which Monster cards have the Martyr Ability, all of these being Soulbound Reward cards that can only be won in Daily Quests and Season Rewards.

COMMON : Firecaller Lvl1 (Fire), Fungus Flinger Lvl1 (Earth)
RARE : Venari Marksrat Lvl 1 (Neutral)
EPIC : Noa the Just Lvl 6 (Water)
LEGENDARY : Iziar Lvl 3 (Life)

Rulesets that will automatically cause your Martyr Monsters to die, such as Poison and Earthquake, are favoured by many players, as you can count on those Monsters dying no matter where they are in the lineup. Just make sure you're boosting the Stats of other Monsters than can survive the Poison or Earthquake Damage.

Fire and Regret (return fire for Ranged attacker) works well when trying to kill your own Monsters and Venari Marksrat has low health so is perfect in this Ruleset.

Born Again & Resurrect are great abilities / rulesets to use with Martyr Monsters, as every time they die the cards around them are boosted, so you can sometimes get 3 or even 4 Stat Boosts from each Martyr Monster used, depending which monsters are in your lineup. For the Born Again Ruleset River Hellondale Lvl 1+ (Water) will pair well with Noa the Just Lvl 6 (Water) or Venari Marksrat Lvl 1+ (Neutral), as Hellondale will Resurrect the first monster to die in battle.

Opportunity and Snipe Rulesets work well as you can often get your opponent to take down your Martyr Monsters by clever planning. Opportunity is more certain as Snipe can be unpredictable at times. Again, Venari Marksrat Lvl 1+ (Neutral) will work really well in the 2nd Position (Snipe) or anywhere in the Lineup for Opportunity Battles.

Poison Battles

STRATEGY : By placing Martyr monsters in your Lineup, you can guarantee that your chosen Monsters get boosted considerably, as the Poison will usually kill the Martyr cards in round 1 or 2. This works especially well when Boosting Monsters with Heal or Immunity (as in the battle below).

Poison Strategy

The Forgotten One is often utilised in Poison Battles, as he gets Immunity at Level 1. By placing two Martyr Monsters next to him it heavily boosts his Stats. In this Battle I also used Scavo Chemist to Cleanse my Grum Flameblade in the front Row, and my opponent was unable to take down Grumm as my front Row tank. Even if he had beaten Grum, my Forgotten One would have made short work of him. I often throw in Cornealus at the back of Poison Battles, as his Self Heal & 12 Health will stop him from getting taken down from Poison and he's also great protection against Sneak attacks.

Earthquake (Flight) Rulesets

Here you can see both my Opponent and I went for a similar lineup, using Obisidan (Summoner) to boost Regal Peryton the flier, in fact he had 2 x Martyr monsters next to his Regal. I thought I was going to lose this battle, but luckily managed to get the last hit on my opponent's boosted Regal. The Aim True Ruleset also helped me here as none of my Monsters missed his Regal when it got to the front.

Earthquake Ruleset Strategy

Use Martyr Monsters WITHOUT flight, to boost Monster cards that have Flight, and try to protect the Flying monsters by putting them in the middle of your lineup. You want the opponent's monsters to get taken out first by the Earthquake Damage in the front.
