For a long time, speaking Guaraní was stigmatized because it was not well regarded and was associated with being poor, ignorant, or a rural worker.

The lack of opportunities in rural areas increased, especially during the dictatorship of General Stroessner. Under the pretext of agrarian reform, he handed millions of hectares of state-owned land to his loyal followers, to the detriment of farmers who were left with fewer opportunities to access land for cultivation.

This led to mass migrations from rural areas to the capital and even abroad. Without academic training, resources, or proficiency in Spanish, many children and adolescents fell victim to an exploitative system known as criadazgo. They were forced to work long hours under unfavorable conditions in exchange for food and shelter—and if they were lucky, permission to attend a night school.

Thus, discrimination arose between inhabitants of the same country for absurd reasons such as place of birth or the language spoken.

Although I was born and have lived most of my life in the capital, I consider myself privileged and fortunate for all the advantages that come with it. However, since my parents moved to the countryside, I feel a subtle form of discrimination for being from the city, as if we are somewhat marginalized for not being native to the locality.

Unfortunately, people hold deeply rooted beliefs that perpetuate stigmas for entirely unfounded reasons—whether discrimination for being from the countryside or the city, or many other forms of prejudice that people suffer daily.

En mi país, diría que hay aún estigmas que la sociedad impone, aunque de una forma casi imperceptible, pero no por eso menos real.

Es así que durante mucho tiempo, fue un estigma el hablar en guaraní, porque no era bien visto, y se asociaba a ser pobre, ignorante y campesino.

La falta de oportunidades en el campo se fue incrementando especialmente desde la época de la dictadura del General Stroessner, que bajo el pretexto de llevar a cabo una reforma agraria, regaló millones de hectáreas de tierra del Estado a sus seguidores leales, en perjuicio de los campesinos, que cada vez tenían menos oportunidades de acceder a un pedazo de tierra para trabajarla.

Esto ocasionó que empezaran los éxodos desde el campo hacia la capital y también al exterior del país. Sin formación académica, sin recursos, sin saber hablar el idioma español, muchos niños, niñas y adolescentes fueron presa de un sistema abominable, llamado "criadazgo" en el cual debían trabajar largas horas, en condiciones poco favorables a cambio de un techo y comidas, y si tenían suerte, el permiso para ir a estudiar a una escuela nocturna.

Así, entre habitantes de un mismo país se discriminaba a unos por razones absurdas como el lugar de nacimiento o el idioma hablado.

Aunque yo nací y viví gran parte de mi vida en la capital, puedo considerarme privilegiada y afortunada por todas las ventajas que ello implica. Pero también, desde que mis padres se mudaron al campo, siento que existe una discriminación velada, por ser de la ciudad, y hace que también nos marginen de cierta forma, por no ser originarios de la localidad.

Lamentablemente, las personas tienen ideas muy arraigadas que ocasionan que se perpetuen estigmas por motivos totalmente infundados, como esa discriminación por ser originario del campo o de la ciudad, y muchas otras que a diario muchas personas tienen que sufrir.
