Utopia (2013~2014)

There are TV series that come as a pleasant surprise, as in my experience, it is common for the story's rhythm to be lost after the first season—or sometimes even during it—diminishing the excitement that hooked us in the first episode.

This doesn’t happen with Utopia, a British series that premiered in 2013, regrettably lasting only two seasons of six episodes each. And when a series is good, we always want more.

Even so, Utopia is perfect for a weekend marathon—or if you’re a little impatient, you might finish it in a single day—because each episode leaves you eager to see the next one until you reach the finale.

I won’t talk much about the plot because I hate spoilers, even for old movies and series—since, like me, many people may not have seen it when it originally aired.

The series revolves around a graphic novel with an online fandom. A group of virtual friends is invited to meet in person to see the unpublished second part of the novel, which one of them claims to possess.

From there, a series of events unfolds, leading the protagonists to suspect that there might be more reality than fiction within the novel’s pages—putting them in mortal danger while unsure of who is telling the truth.

Honestly, it’s a series I enjoyed from beginning to end, though of course, I would love a third season or a movie about it. Strangely, it was canceled despite its success with both critics and audiences.

Maybe the plot revealed too much… You never know where fantasy ends and reality begins.

Hay series de televisión que son una grata sorpresa, ya que en mi experiencia, lo habitual es que luego de la primera temporada y a veces durante la misma, se pierda el ritmo de la historia que nos enganchara en el primer episodio.

Esto no pasa con Utopía, una serie británica estrenada en 2013, con lamentablemente apenas 2 temporadas de 6 capítulos cada una. Y es que cuando una serie es buena, siempre queremos más.

Aún así, Utopía es una serie perfecta para un maratón de fin de semana, o si eres un poco ansioso, podrías terminarla en un día, porque cada episodio te deja con las ganas de ver el siguiente y así hasta llegar al final.

Hablaré poco del argumento, porque odio los spoilers aunque se trate de películas o series viejas, porque así como yo, tal vez muchos no la hayan visto en su momento.

La serie trata sobre una novela gráfica con un fandom en internet, el el cual un grupo de amigos virtuales son convocados a reunirse en persona para ver la segunda parte de la novela, inédita, que uno de ellos afirma tener en su poder.

A partir de allí, empieza una serie de eventos que hará pensar a los protagonistas que hay más realidad que ficción en las páginas de la novela gráfica, lo que los pondrá en peligro de muerte y sin saber quién dice la verdad.

Sinceramente, es una serie que me gustó de inicio a fin, aunque por supuesto, quisiera ver una tercera temporada o una película sobre la serie, que extrañamente fue cancelada a pesar del éxito que tuvo con la crítica y la audiencia.

Tal vez la trama contaba demasiado... Nunca se sabe hasta que punto la ficción es sólo fantasía.
