Fade To Gray is part of Visage. Conceived as the second single from their first album, the song was released on Polydor Records in 1980. Visage, undoubtedly a pioneer of the new romantic trend of its time, was founded in 1978 next to the famous British pub Blitz. All the young people of London, exposed to the new aesthetics and romantic ideas of the time, gathered here against the background of the punk spirit that prevailed at that time.

Steve Strange worked in Blitz and was a member of punk band The Moors Murders, but was also heavily involved in the New Romantic movement. Blitz also featured Rusty Egan, former Rich Kids drummer. Rusty Egan eventually formed Ultravox with Rich Kids and later Visage member Midge Ure.

During the Blitz (which usually included songs by David Bowie, Kraftwerk or Roxy Music), Strange and Egan were constantly searching for new and interesting music and went to the recording studios with Midge Ur. In late 1978, Strange, Egan and Ure recorded a demo that would become Visage's first single, with a very progressive approach similar to Zager & Evans' In The Year 2525.

The aforementioned trio was joined by Barry Adamson (bass), John McJock (guitar) and Dave Formula (keyboards). They were all members of the magazine group. Visage settled permanently and signed to Radar Records in September 1979 and released their first single. However, Thar failed to plot. Fade to Gray was undoubtedly the group's most successful single. It entered the charts in late 1980, reaching number eight in the United Kingdom, number one in Germany and Switzerland, and the top five in other European countries.

In France and Germany, Fade To Gray achieved Gold status with sales of over 500,000 copies, while in the United Kingdom it achieved Silver status with sales of 250,000 units. The album's third single, Mind Of A Toy, was also a huge hit, reaching the Top 20. But after the release of The Anvil's second album in 1982, Visage began to fall apart. Midge Ure left to join Ultravox. Curry and Formula decided to abandon the project. In 1996, DJ Marc'O recorded the song "Fade To Gray", which also reached number 1 in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Finland and the Netherlands.

Two years ago, the Italian band Datura covered the single with a vocal track written by Steve Strange himself, written especially for this version and which reached the top five of the Italian Singles Chart. Even more surprising, in his autobiography U2 By U2, Bono claims that the song was inspired by bassist Adam Clayton's attempt to play the bass line of "Fade To Grey" on New Year's Day.

In 2000, Strange decided to join the group. They have appeared several times on television, including a new recording of Fade To Grey. Shortly after, Visage disappeared again, returning to action in 2013 with Steve Strange, Steve Barnacle, Lauren Duvall and Robin Simon.
