In the first two feature films, the sequence of events in the saga was preserved. 2001's Fast and Furious 2 and 2003's Fast and Furious 2 focused on Dom and Brian (Paul Walker). In particular, the sequel focuses on the events that took place in Miami a year after the events of the previous film and the escape of the former police officer.

However, the series' plot was temporarily diverted in 2006 when The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Race hit the big screen. It is considered a spin-off and is not essential to the franchise. Instead, it follows a new cast of characters led by Shawn Boswell (Lucas Black) and Han (Sung Kang). The film ends with the death of one of the most popular characters. This led to several timeline changes in later stories to ensure his return.

The Fast and the Furious has added additional material in the form of short films over the years. It was recorded for release on DVD and Blu-ray, allowing information and data to be added without relying on post-credits scenes or long takes. The first of these was included in the national format of Fast & The Furious: Full Throttle in 2003. Directed by Philip Atwell, it follows Brian's transformation from Los Angeles police officer to criminal. In turn, Fast & Furious 8 introduces the villain Cipher (Charlize Theron) and marks the first installment without Paul Walker. Finally, Fast & Furious 9 introduces Jacob Toretto (John Cena), who becomes the enemy of his brother Dom and adds some interesting additional sequences. The opening story of the final trilogy sees the return of many of the franchise's iconic characters.

The announced post-credits scene features Cipher, Deckard, and Dwayne Johnson's Hobbes. Plus, the new villain comes from epic mythology. The main character of the fifth episode is Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), the son of Hernán Reyes.
