Running in Heavy weather | PUM day 5

In this blog post I combine my journey on training and running a few marathons with the Januari Hive power up challange in which I participate

Running!

Last night there was heavy snowfall in the Netherlands. Which means perfect weather to get up early and set the first footsteps in the fresh snow! Being the first is preferable if you choose to go outside - as the fresh snow is not half as slippery as compressed snow. Running in the dark, with snow also means you have to adjust your pace downwards. There is no use getting injured or stepping in pools of water. With some convidence I started my run.

The first 7 km went smooth, needed to be careful where a placed my feet as certain parts were very slippery (wooden bridges) - but it was good fun! After 40 min, it started to rain. Normally rain doesn’t affect me much as my cap prevents it from getting in my face and getting wet clothes only matters when you stop running. With snow it is different - the rain is warmer compaired to the snow so the snow will melt. Within 2km my shoes and socks were just a sponge full of water.

Time to use my secret weapon - I called my wife, while running if she could have a fresh pair of running socks and shoes ready so I could finish my route! Running 2 km back to my house with nearly frozen toes was not so fun and the thought of just calling it a day and warm up was in my mind for a few seconds. But as I got back home - I quickly changed shoes and socks and went for the last 4 km!
