Battle Mage Secrets - Don't Rule Out Ranged Cards In Fire And Regret Battles!

The theme for the current "Battle Mage Secret" challenge is Fire And Regret ruleset this time! This means all units receive the Return Fire ability at the start of the battle. Enemy units that attack with ranged attacks receive damage back. It's not always easy to get the specific ruleset, but if you play hard enough, you definitely can find one! This time I was lucky enough to have one - woohoo!

So here's the interesting battle that I encountered.

Anyway, I thought it would be still be interesting to introduce some useful cards and show how their strengths can be maximised especially with a particular ruleset. In this post, the featured card is an Epic Water card, Igor Darkspear!

At 2 mana, one certainly cannot expect much from a card. However, Igor Darkspear impresses me with not only a decent speed of 3 (4 with Kelya Frendul), and a bulky 5 HP. That 1 Ranged damage is definitely a big bonus. Because it is such a staple for my Water lineups, I have rented a GF version to secure more Gold bonus for the Glint and SPS rewards. (Tip: Do try to get the GF cards for cards that you use extremely often.)

As usual, here's the lore for Igor Darkspear for your reading interest:

Igor Darkspear is the leader of an aggressive tribe known as the Trench Dwellers who patrol the depths of the ocean around the island of Praetoria. The Trench Dwellers are highly territorial and will not hesitate to kill any who trespass in their waters.

As settlers and explorers came to Praetoria, Igor grew more and more angry. His waters were being invaded by ships, fishermen, and outsiders. Igor cared not for why these people had arrived and had no sympathy for their plight. Using his powers over water, he led his tribe in coordinated attacks around the coasts. And still more outsiders came.

During one attack, Igor was approached by a strange, bird-masked man who called himself Doctor Blight. The Doctor talked of wiping the land clean and promised complete death and devastation to all who stood in the Chaos Legion's path.

Igor liked this. He aligned his tribe with the Chaos Legion to help cleanse his waters of all who would trespass. He yearns for the day when the ocean is stained red with blood.

For low mana battles, I always would go for Kelya Frendul-led lineup with Sea Monster taking up the position. Even with so many rounds of packs and card launches, Sea Monster is still one of the strongest tanks for low mana fights.

Sea Monster takes up almost half of the mana quota but it is definitely worth it! With 4 Melee damage and self heal ability, it's never easy to take it down.

Tide Biter is one of the best partners Sea Monster can have. At a higher speed, Tide Biter with Reach ability often helps to clear away the tank's armor, allowing Sea Monster to inflict damage on the opposing tank's HP directly. At 3 mana, he deals 2 Melee damage, which is as strong as any card could be.

Torrent Fiend comes in as a filler card, which is very important for low mana battles but sometimes these little things can make a difference.

Wait, isn't this Fire And Regret? At 2 mana, Igor Darkspear is one of the stronger low mana cards out there, and with 5 HP, it should be able to withstand some reflected damage. The alternative would be to fill Venator Kinjo but he can't hit from the backline.

• Pre Battle: My opponent put out an interesting one card lineup, and experienced players will know how scary this card can be when Enraged. Let's see how Sea Monster and the cards fare.
  

• Round 1: As expected, Tide Biter clears away the opposing tank's armor, while Sea Monster and Igor Darkspear deal their hits. Thanks to the armor boost from Kelya Frendul, Sea Monster survived a big hit.
  

• Round 2: And there we have it! It wasn't as scary as I thought it would.

Post Battle

Did my strategy work? I guess my strategy was plain and simple. Sea Monster, Tide Biter, filler card and put a decent card at the backline. I didn't overthink, even though low mana battles often throw up many surprises because the permutations can be limitless.

What's the Battle Mage Secret? Don't overthink! And of course, you can use Ranged cards in this ruleset too!
