Battle Mage Secrets - Is Djinn Chwala Still A Strong Card?

The theme for the current "Battle Mage Secret" challenge is Broken Arrows ruleset this time! This means units with ranged attacks cannot be used. Units with 2 types of attack (which include ranged) cannot be used. It's not always easy to get the specific ruleset, but if you play hard enough, you definitely can find one! This time I was lucky enough to have one - woohoo!

So here's the interesting battle that I encountered.

Anyway, I thought it would be still be interesting to introduce some useful cards and show how their strengths can be maximised especially with a particular ruleset. In this post, the featured card is a Dragon Epic card, Djinn Chwala, which is no stranger for long time players!

Older players would know how good Djinn Chwala used to be, because back in good old times, not many cards have the Thorns ability and Djinn Chwala is one of few cards and is able to cause nightmares for opponents. With tanky stats like 5 armor and 9 HP, that's a whole lot of Thorns to dish out. Is it still as powerful these days?

As usual, here's the lore for Djinn Chwala for your reading interest:

Dawn of the Djinn 4 of 4 - Only a short time after the Djinn were released, most of them were already seeing their elemental captivity as a blessing rather than a curse. They had far greater power than before, now that they were working with the force of the Planet at their backs. Pursuit of power was at the core of Belludae beliefs, so most of them would make small sacrifices for greater power.

The Djinn have not all found one another, and it will be difficult for them to do so since many of them reside in different elements. This is why several of the Djinn have submitted themselves as cards in the Moxian games, so they can connect with their lost brethren. Gradually they will come together to Praetoria as part of the last lines of defense, channeling the power of the Planet into an impenetrable wall to hold back the Chaos Legion.

With just 14 mana and very limited options, I thought of gambling on a solo Djinn Chwala and hence I needed a Dragon summoner. Helios Matriarch was chosen despite its high mana because it's at Level 2, and that allows me to use a Level 2 Djinn Chwala.

Djinn Chwala is my solo card in this lineup and it's all eyes to see how strong its Thorns can be.

  • Pre Battle: When the lineups showed up, I wasn't sure I could win this because there are strong Magic cards in there. In fact, my opponent had 3 Legendary cards in the lineup, whereas I only had 1 Epic card.
    image.png
  • Round 1: So the 5 vs 1 battle began! My opponent lost 1 card in this round due to Thorns. Djinn Chwala was clearly struggling to overcome the Magic hits from the Legendaries.
    image.png
  • Round 2: We all know how this was going to end. Strong effort by the lonely Djinn Chwala by taking out 3 cards but it's down to 1 HP left.

  • Round 3: So close!!! We started with 1 card against 5 cards and we lost just by 1 turn.

Post Battle

Did my strategy work? My gamble didn't work out as I would have anticipated, but that's ok. After all, Djinn Chwala being a relatively strong Epic card, is still not as strong as Legendary cards and Magic damage. That said, with all the new cards and editions, Djinn Chwala has somehow been relegated in most players' lineups. I recalled the times when I could clock 15 wins in a row just spamming Djinn Chwala. These days it would be impossible to do so.

What's the Battle Mage Secret? Djinn Chwala seems to have lost the charm it had last time. And that's kinda sad.

So that's all I have! What are your takeaways from this battle? Feel free to comment below, as I am always keen to learn and improve!

As always, thanks for reading and have a pleasant day ahead!
