Warriors Of Future (2022): How Did The Highest Grossing Domestic Film In Hong Kong Fare?

image.png

Hello! It's been a while since I wrote about movies and shows, and I recently had a chance to watch this movie Warriors Of Future, which is a Hong Kong sci-fi action film.

For those who are familiar with the Hong Kong celebrity scene, the lineup is star studded as the movie stars Louis Koo, Sean Lau and Carina Lau. So it really wasn't a surprise it ended up becoming the No.1 highest grossing Chinese/domestic film in Hong Kong. (It has since fallen to No.2 as it was overtaken by another movie that was released in 2023.)

For those who are curious what the storyline is like, here's the synopsis:

When a meteor carrying a destructive plant strikes the world, a suicide squad is given hours to save their post-apocalyptic city from total collapse.

It doesn't say much because the movie definitely has more depth than this plot.

First, the action scenes were very well done. This movie definitely lives up to its sci-fi action genre, with a lot of sci-fi stuff, as well as being packed with a lot of action scenes. It probably wasn't easy to shoot this sort of film but I thought the team pulled this off. I was kept on the edge of my seat for most parts of the movie as it was so intense and I kept wanting to see what would happen next.

Second, the emotions were relatively on point in this movie. For such movies, there are bound to have many emotional scenes, as the characters in this movie often have to choose between options, and this means having to sacrifice either individuals or certain groups of people. Such decisions are often not easy to make, and it's often very painful. I appreciate the fact that the movie brought this aspect out, and tried to make the audience empathise with the characters. Personally, I thought there was room for improvement in this aspect, compared to the current case where it's just action after action.

Third, the plot twist (at the end). The plot twist wasn't that surprising (especially for those who have watched enough dramas and movies) but it was still a brilliant twist, and added more depth to the storyline. It made things more complicated for the rescue team, and exposed the harsh realities of the world we live in, as well as the ugly side of human nature. When push comes to shove, it's inevitable that some people will turn selfish and have no qualms to do evil things at all costs. I will just leave it as such, before I spoil the plot further.

At a run time of 1h 41m, the length was just nice and like most movies, it was a relatively happy ending. Ultimately, it's the teamwork and making full use of each other's strengths that made the impossible possible.

All in all, I do recognise that this might not be of interest to most of the non-Chinese community of Hive, but I still decide to share this because I believe we have a diverse community here and who knows, someone might find this interesting.

And finally, how did this highest grossing domestic film in Hong Kong fare in my eyes? Personally, I am not a fan of sci-fi movies, so while this movie ticks most of the checkboxes, I didn't quite enjoy myself as much as some of the earlier movies that I reviewed (in the table below). Still, it's a pretty decent movie, so on balance, I would give 3 out of 5 stars! Let me know what you think!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
