Weekend Engagement - Household Chores and Google Tasks

image.png

Haha I never thought I would be writing about my thoughts on household chores - but here I am, writing this on Hive, thanks to the prompts by this weekend's Weekend Engagement!

I used to help out around the family when I was a teenager, be it sweeping the floor, mopping the floor, cleaning furniture, etc. It was assigned by my dad, with the aim of instilling discipline, learning some life skills, and of course, contributing to the family since I am part of it.

When I grew older, I was busy with my university studies and subsequently work, my parents gradually took over. I still helped out occasionally, on occasions where someone fell sick/hospitalised, or when my dad hurt his wrist and couldn't do any chores that involved heavy load.

Fast forward to my current situation - I have moved out so now I have to do 100% of the household chores, simply because there is no one else to share the load with. :P

I guess that's the trade-off that comes with having some freedom to your life hahaha, but that's another topic for another day! At the start, I felt quite overwhelming, but after I sorted things out, the chores began to feel like a routine that I would incorporate into my lifestyle.

If I had to choose one that I enjoy the most - I think that would be doing laundry. There's not much effort involved since most of the work is done by the washing machine. The manual effort is only sorting the laundry pieces, putting in the detergent and laundry sanitiser, and then hang the clothes out to dry (and keep/fold them after they are dry). It's a pleasant feeling to know that the clothes are clean and nice-smelling once again and you can wear that favourite T-shirt or jeans in the coming week.

If I had to choose one that I dislike the most - I think it's ironing the clothes. I think it's manually intensive and I have lost count of the number of close shaves that I almost scalded myself when I was ironing my work shirts and pants.

If there was one tip I could share, it would be to make use of the Google Tasks app, or some similar app to track the chores. I know some friends set aside one day (usually the weekend) to do the household chores, but because my schedule is fluid, I find it hard and rigid to mark out a specific time and date to do these tasks. For me, I would break them down into individual tasks, and do a few each day when I have some free time. Over time, I realise I had trouble keeping track what I completed and what I didn't complete. So I went in search on some app and that's when discovered Google Tasks!

Here's a sample screenshot! So I listed down the tasks that I needed to do periodically, and whenever I completed one of them, I would update the date. It helps me greatly because I knew what hasn't been done or cleaned for a long time and I could prioritise the chores accordingly!

So that's all for my sharing about my experience with household chores this week! Hope you enjoyed reading and let me know if you have any comments! Have a pleasant week ahead!

I did not know about the usefulness of this application. I can't use a fixed schedule for housework either. I think it can be useful. Maybe I will take a look at it. Have a nice weekend @relf87
