Yummy First Experience At Oriental Kopi!

image.png

In case you are wondering, @shawnnft has a February 2025 challenge and the theme is Chinese food. I hope this one counts as Chinese food!

Today I want to share a place that would be very familiar with locals and probably Malaysians as well. And that's Oriental Kopi!

A little background, they became popular among the locals when many locals would make day trips to Johor Bahru in Malaysia and queue for it. I have been to Johor Bahru a few times, and each time I wanted to try it over there, the queues were extremely long and I didn't get a chance.

And recently, they opened their first outlet in Singapore! Just when I thought I had a chance to try them, the queues were also very long over here. o.O

But finally, there was one weekday where I had to take leave from work to run some errands, and I thought I should try my luck again. And at 10am in the morning and on a weekday, there was no queue! So without hesitation, I quickly headed in!

Here's the Google Review location/rating.

This is a photo of the restaurant. I actually took a photo when I was leaving and as you can see, the queues have formed during the lunch hour. Fortunately, I was early.

Being the first time here, first I went for their Double Butter Kaya Toast. Toast is like the quintessential food to go to for a good breakfast. This was SGD 3.10 after taxes (USD 2.30). I was very impressed at how crispy the toast was, compared to some other breakfast places. As you could see in the next photo, the amount of butter was very generous as well. All in all, it was very delicious and was definitely one of the top few toasts that I have eaten. If you are feeling down, this is definitely a happy food to munch on. The price was also quite reasonable.

Next up, this was my main for breakfast/lunch, the Oriental Chicken Hor Fun. This cost SGD 11.40 after taxes (USD 8.50). First the broth was very prawny, which was something I appreciated. Other than the Hor Fun, it came with shredded chicken, fish cake, and prawns. All in all, the broth stood out for me, but the fish cake wasn't as tasty as I hoped it to be, so I thought this was more of a slightly above average dish and not a "WOW" for me.

Finally, for the beverage, I ordered the Oriental Mocha. This cost SGD 5.80 after taxes (USD 4.30). The price was a little steep compared to other conventional kopi/teh (coffee/tea) but I have seen this "overflowing drink" so much on social media and I thought I should try it as well. That said, I have no idea why they need to make so much of the drink such that it overflows. Lol. For those who have tasted the Asian type of coffee, you would know it's different from the lattes and cappuccinos. This one ticks the checkbox taste wise, but price wise, I feel that I could get a similar glass elsewhere.

Here's the combined shot of my lunch!

Here's my receipt with date and time stamp as proof that I ate in February! In total, this cost about SGD 20 (USD 15), which might be expensive or cheap depending which part of the world you live in.

So that summed up my first experience at the extremely popular Oriental Kopi! I think overall the experience was pleasant, and food was decent (especially the toast!), and I would definitely return to try out other food items in their extensive menu.

Thanks for reading and hope the food didn't make you too hungry! :P

Yeah most of my friends will go over to eat at Johor Bahru because it's cheaper, but the queues over there are very long, and I don't want to spend time queueing. Haha. Thanks for holding this challenge!
