Braids of Desire

"He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not..."

Frustrated, Gemma added another dismembered flower to the growing pile at her side. She had lost count of the number of times she had repeated the phrase that afternoon. Squinting into the bright sunshine, she leaned back on her elbows, stretching out her legs in the crisp long grass. She tugged at another juicy-looking green stem and then, breaking it in two, parted her lips slightly before popping the ends between her teeth. She glanced over her shoulder at Liam who was sitting hunched over on a nearby bench, seemingly engrossed in other things.

Her toes curled involuntarily around the stalks of white daisies that peppered the field at the end of their lane. She used to come here often, in her quiet times - to think, to read. Now she spent much of her time just wanting to be in the same space that he was in, even if they found it difficult to engage.

She couldn't pinpoint when things had changed between them. One minute they had been best friends spending the long days of summer languishing together in the back garden, wild swimming down at the river, leaping from one adventure to the next, and then, out of nowhere, the awkwardness had crept in. Her heart's desire changed - instead of simply exploring life with him, now all she wanted was to explore more of him. But just like the game, she felt that their friendship had morphed into a solo affair.

Her mother had taught her how to play the original game of effeuiller la marguerite or he loves me, he loves me not. She convinced herself that even if she did not know the extent of his feelings either way, she would be content enough to know that he cared! She drew another flower and continued stripping petals - one by one - from the pile of daisies that lay at her feet. She knew she was supposed to accept the answer given to her by the first flower, but it had not been positive, and so she had tried a second, and then a third. It was a woeful exercise but she had kept going, ever hopeful that the tide would turn in her favour. As she gazed at Liam, her heart stung just a little. She had tried to approach him earlier but he had dismissed her with a curt wave of the hand, shutting her out of the world that he was creating. He was hiding something from her, she was certain of it. And then the possibility hit her, and she threw her hand over her mouth, sucking in a deep breath. Maybe it wasn't a something, maybe it was a someone. She felt a chasm open up inside of her. The weight of it was almost too much for her seventeen-year-old self to bear. She lay back and closed her eyes, squeezing a few rogue tears from their ducts. So this is what unrequited love felt like.

A short while later, she opened her eyes, wiped her tear-stained face, and stood, preparing to leave for home. As she gathered her things she noticed one last daisy on the edge of her blanket. She picked it up and without thinking started reciting... "he loves me, he loves me not..." As she got to the last petal, her heart sank. "He..." but she couldn't bring herself to finish the sentence.

"He loves you!"

She jumped, the voice taking her by surprise. She turned to find Liam standing behind her, a serious demeanour gracing his face. She hadn't seen him approaching. "Oh, erm hi Liam..." she spluttered, narrowing her eyes and staring at him quizzically.

He looked at her and then cast his eyes to his hands. She followed his gaze. He was holding a beautiful long braid of daisies, interlocked neatly in a close embrace, to form a perfect circle. He shot her a cheeky grin and placed the crown of white petals on her head. "I said," he repeated, "he loves you." He paused, just long enough to see her face light up. "I hope you like it," he whispered, wrapping his arms around her and drawing her close, "I made it, especially for you."

This is my entry for the 5-minute daily prompt by @mariannewest currently hosted by @felt.buzz and in conjunction with the Dreemport challenge for this week. You can find the prompt post here and the Dreemport Challenge Week 2 of the Double here.

I set the timer for 5 minutes and wrote. At the end of the 5 minutes, I used the free-write from my thought flow, created during those 5 minutes, as the basis for a short story.

My lovely partner for the August Dreemport challenge is @fredaa. She is a new Hiver. Please support her by taking a read of her own post for this challenge, titled Long Braids.

Thank you, my lovely 💗 I could picture the two of them, first her, then him. I had fun writing this and getting inside her head. Drawing emotion from experience makes a writer's job a little easier hehe. The images are from Canva - they have some really good ones!!! Maybe they've added more or maybe I'm just more in tune with the words I am searching lately - eg: this one I didn't search for daisy on its own, I searched for daisy he loves me he loves me not. !LOLZ !LUV

Oh poor Gemma, getting herself worked up when Liam was busy making a long beautiful braid of daisies for her to prove his love.

And oh, this is so typical of our relationship with God. Sometimes we find ourselves complaining, whinning about our situations, almost giving up without knowing that God is planning something beautiful for us.

Thank you for sharing this.

Absolutely!!! You got it. But it's so hard to know what is going on inside teenage hearts and minds hehe. I guess it's not always easy knowing what plans God has for us either. We just need to listen and have faith. !LUV

Oh, Sam, just when I'd resolved not to have any more butterflies from Fictional characters, you do this. I'm glad Liam had noticed. I'm glad he Heard and made something so thoughtful and most of all I'm glad he made that statement. The pictures are beautiful and love is too.🤗💜

Oh wooow Sam! Created this amazing short story in just 5 minutes?? I love how you set the scene, it's like I'm actually there feeling the fluffy grass and smeeling all the daisies 😊 I used to play a lot with daisies as I grew up and made some crowns of daisies trapped to each other hehehe it was fun to pass the time 🤩

But the point is... you are amazing !LADY

hi Margarida 😍 Well, as per my extra notes on this story, it wasn't created in full within 5 minutes, although after the initial 5 minute free write I knew where it was going and wanted to finish it! Daisy chains are fun!!! I appreciate the !LUV my dear

🎶"He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not..."🎶

I tried adding a smooth voice to it and it sure came out a good sing😄

Nicely woven script 👌

Once again my friend, your writing flowed with ease. Very well written as I've come to expect from your remarkable pieces.

I've always wondered about that flower thing tho.. do the flowers have different amounts of petals? I guess I could check that lmao.. hoping you may have the answer already haha. Cause obviously if the petal count remains the same, then the answer would always be the same, surely?

What a dope story though. Really sweet ending, which I never saw coming. #legend

Thank you for your kind words and the vote of confidence. You ask an excellent question! You must be a true writer hehe. I love it when people care about whether a piece of writing contains believable threads. When things don't add up to me in a piece, I cannot immerse myself. And if I am already immersed, I get ripped out of that state so quickly and lose interest. Anyway, the daisies !LOLZ... daisies as a flower genus have varying numbers of petals across the many different varieties, but looking simply at the Oxeye daisy represented here, they can have anywhere between 15-35 petals per flower, so it is relatively random and hence the game can reveal a different answer each time it is played. !LUV !ALIVE

That is dope my friend!.. had no idea tbh. Very cool. Weird how the petal count varies. Nature is so remarkable.

hehe... you know when you asked, I was like hot damn, I did NOT fact-check that!!! I was so happy you engaged so meaningfully. So I went to check haha... I did suspect that they must have differing petal counts or the game would never have arisen in the first place! But a quick read of a couple of articles set my mind at ease that my story was at least believable !LOLZ 😂

A short story that made me smile ear to ear and opened up doors of memories.
Oh! The young hearts, passing through joyful experiences wrapped in fear and doubts. It has its own pleasure, hasn't it?

I loved the end. Just imagine the emotions she had that time. The racing heart, the blushing cheeks, the butterflies in the stomach....... I ♥️ it

I love reading your posts, dear. !LOLZ. A non fiction is easier to read for me 🙂. You know, I struggle with Vocabulary especially in a fiction writing.

This piece, however, was shorter. So I could make sense of it

This was a twist that I totally didn't see coming ☺️. The flowers she kept stripping petals from finally gave a positive answer.

This was a really lovely read. I always learn something new whenever I read your article and today, it's the actual name of the game– effeuiller la marguerite

I came in through #dreemport.

Thank you for your kind words ❣️ All you have to do is write, write, write. Read a lot too!!! Find authors whose writing you enjoy and who write similar genres to what you enjoy writing and see what works best... If you love a specific genre, you will have an idea already of what makes a good unique story line and a quality read for you, and what doesn't. I always feel that in order to grow and develop as a writer you have to maintain a good balance between reading and writing. !LUV !ALIVE !PIZZA

hahaha... yep I only managed a couple of hundred words in 5 minutes !LOLZ Thing is, if something triggers from free write, I don't like to waste it. I'd rather develop it there and then into a short story! After all, free writes are there to get the creative juices flowing hehe. Occasionally, I have left a 5 minute free write as is though. Thank you for stopping by, Ed 💗And the French, huh? 😂 yep - no surprises there! I love it when I learn something new! !LUV !ALIVE !PIZZA
