Vintage 1985 Johnson Matthey Alaska Round

Johnson Matthey was a major global manufacturer of silver and platinum for much of the first half of the 20th century. Johnson Matthey supplied a significant amount of silver and platinum to the industrial world for use in heavy machinery and other equipment, even though investors went on to buy most of the metal they produced.

The manufacture of a large variety of silver bars in a wide range of sizes and weights is what Johnson Matthey is best known for. They provide two different types of silver bars: poured and pressed. Because pressed silver bars are made from a mold that carefully stamps out each bar, they have more precise edges and characteristics. In contrast, bars that have been poured have a somewhat rougher appearance since they were made by pouring molten silver into a mold. Smaller JM bars are pressed, and larger ones are usually made of poured silver.

1985 Johnson Matthey Alaska Anniversary Round

JM has also occasionally made rounds. The rounds were struck in fine silver,.999.

Obverse: The round's obverse depicts the Alaskan state flag flying above a mountain covered in snow. A dogsled team is seen mushing through the scenery to the left. The word "ALASKA" appears above the flag, while the year "1985" appears beneath it.

Reverse: This round's reverse is the typical reversal seen on a lot of Johnson Matthey rounds. At the top, "JOHNSON MATTHEY" is the name of the mint. The words "ASSAYERS REFINERS/1 OUNCE TROY" occupy the central section. The wording "FINE SILVER" indicates the content and is written in large scripted letters just below that. In that sentence, the purity "999" is situated above the letters "ER". At the bottom is Johnson Matthey's mint mark, which consists of two squares: one with a JM and the other with an oval-shaped pickaxe and hammer inside.

The Johnson Matthey silver rounds are in high demand due to their recognition within the secondary market as one of the most well-known silver bullion rounds. These rounds weigh 1 troy ounce each and are .999 pure silver. The rounds are no longer being minted and are increasingly difficult to locate in excellent condition at a price your willing to pay for.

The reverse is the same for all their rounds. I wonder if they made other rounds for different states. And I wonder if they made one for Hawaii. Just wondering !LOL
