A trio of Orcadian bands in a ttt from Orkney
Hello Hello to all music-loving Hivians
It is Tuesday and that of course that means it is #ttt or #threetunetuesday and so it's time to share some tunes!
(For those of you Talk Time with Tengo fans, we are on a break till after the summer)
The songs you will hear today have been picked by me! My theme this week is pretty much self-explanatory when you know that I going on holiday on Friday. We do like to explore the UK, and this time we are going back to a place where I have not visited since I lived there as a child and that is the Orkney Islands off the North of Scotland!
People hailing from Orkney are called Orcadians, my theme then for this ttt is Orcadian musicians.
Long live #ttt 😁🎼 and #threetunetuesday

The formalities
This week is week 106 of ttt and if you wish to participate then follow the rules laid out by @ablaze in his post from last week John Martyn for Three Tune Tuesday - Week 105 - 10 HBI shares to be won!
Do Go support @ablaze as without him we would not have this mental fun musical activity that you can win HSBI from! I am happy to be one of the TEN sponsors and it is kinda fun checking out music from all over this world of ours!
This is week 106 did I mention that already!
Formalities over, let's get down to it
The Orkney Islands are fluffing miles away, but not as far away or northerly as the Shetland Isles where I used to work.
I decided to make this a two parter, the second part will be next week when we are there and I will share some scenic shots too!
Are you in a folky mood?
So let's get down to it!
Saltfishforty - The Creelman
The Creelman by Saltfishforty at Whiteness Hall, Shetland in December 2010.
Saltfishforty are a fresh and dynamic duo hailing from the Orkney Islands in the north of Scotland. Douglas Montgomery (fiddle/viola) and Brian Cromarty (songs/guitar/mandola) combine the rich traditional music of Orkney with original compositions. The duo have four previous albums to their name: LIVE (2013), Netherbow (2010), Orkney Twister (2005) and Goose Music (2003).
A creelman is a fisherman who uses creels (or pots, traps) to catch crabs and lobsters around the coast of Scotland. Brian, who plays the mandola in the band, explained that he had written the song for his father, who is a "Creelman" in Orkney.
Are your feet stomping yet?
I used to play the fiddle or violin at school, but it is so popular up there, that I had no chance and stopped as soon as I left school lol!
FARA — Wind Dancers (Live at Firth Community Centre, Orkney - The Visit 2022)
What we love about the fiddle and folk music is that often the best recordings are live!
Next up is FARA which was originally a quartet of four lassies however one departed for pastures new and was replaced by Rory Matheson.
Look at how much fun founding Orkney frontwomen Jeana Leslie, Catriona Price and Kristan Harvey are having on their fiddles!
The band was formed in 2014 and as you can tell they are all gifted musicians and all went to one college or other to study music.
Do check out their FARA site for more info onthem.
The Chair - The Big Set @ The Trad Awards 2010
We are going large to finish today's set.
The Chair are an eight-piece folk band from Orkney. They formed in 2004, after the success of a one-off appearance at the Orkney Folk Festival.
This was them live in Perth another town in Scotland.
Folk festivals can be fantastic places, and the music is awesome, do go if you ever have the chance

I hope that you enjoyed these tunes from these Orcadian Bands
Which was your favourite (if any) ?
Note: The three YouTube videos that I have shared are not owned by me, I am simply spreading great music on Hive.
I wish that you all have a brilliant rest of your week, and until we meet again enjoy your tunes 🎶🎵🎶

Great selection Ed. The tunes certainly get you bopping to the beat. You can't beat live folk music I think.
I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project which will be highlighted in the next post!
Thanks Steve and thanks for the pick.
You are right, there really is something special about it. Been far too long since I seen any now that I think about it!

I loved The Wind Dancer. It almost lulled me to sleep too. Lol. But the winner for me is The chair. Wait, do they do the tap dance in
Oakley?Orkney? That third one gave me those vibes. I think I've watched one or two movies where such tunes are incorporated. It's always nice to watch men and women get lost in the arms of each other while dancing away. The Chair is great. So those violins are what I tried to play in my youth lol.
The Chair when they play I just want to go yeehah and get up there and stomp around lmao
What? You tried to master the violin? How am I just knowing this??? How was it?
Hola hola, Super Ed!! You'll be wishing it's already Friday to go on vacation, hehe
I liked your picks for today, and my favorite is the third one.
Ah yes The Chair gets you going!
Yes with the SEC now attacking Binance and the others, a holiday can't come fast enough Super Eli!
It rained this morning, and I saw a leaf fall from one of the plum trees in the yard. Summer is over. Come back!
You are right Summer what summer, we have had our allocated three days already lol! You have plum trees? I bet they're delicious!
Not my plums, they just happen to grow outside my window. When the fruits are ripe there are dozens of people fighting each other for them, even bringing ladders or hoisting their kids up to the higher branches. I'm allergic, so I don't join.
Oh, this is some great stuff. I love folk music. I used to go to a festival every year that was just folk music. It was awesome stuff. All kinds of good music like bluegrass, cajun, etc. Thanks for sharing!
I thought you might have been to a folk festival.
I don't listen to it all the time, but it is great for live music.
Yes, it is definitely an atmosphere and often a mood. A lot of times the American Folk music can be quite depressing. It's not something I can handle 24/7 all week!
I'll be honest and say I'm no fan of trad music, having been force fed it growing up in the north of Scotland. However, I cant help deny that these are great musicians. I particularly liked the build up on the last song - they nailed that quite well !

That's pretty cool stuff, some great choices. I liked it! How is the weather treating you there?
You're so spot on about that! Most folk music really is better live, and all these three prove it. I really enjoyed Saltfishforty! Those two were spot on!
Enjoy the trip back up to the island Ed, these were a real treat, let me tell you, all new to me too, which is an added bonus. There is nothing like a few creamy pints of Guinness, Trad music on in the pub and a chat with friends (between songs) Quality stuff..
