Burntisland Bucking the declining Scottish High Street Trend

avatar

During Covid times we moved town, just four miles but enough that it meant changing our doctor.

However, the one I was assigned was harder to get to, so I declined and have stayed with my existing one as they know my conditions and everything is done via calls which irks me!

The only problem is that I have to go back to the town to collect my meds every two months as they won't send to a pharmacist in this town.

image.png

It gives me a chance to hop on the bus along the coast. I like to go early in the morning.

image.png

Being winter time, we never know what the weather will be like in the UK. The highlight is going to the award winning butcher, he opens at 8am, so that was me saying bye bye to my bus at about 8.40am.

image.png

Opposite the bus-stop is proof that print advertising is not dead just yet.
As the ugly building says "The Fact That You're Reading Me, Proves That I Work"!

image.png

Now beside the bus-stop is the library and that building is more in keeping with what you would expect on a British town High Street.

image.png

You can see that it had been raining, but Iwas lucky and missed it!

This is the start of the High Street and the bus had dropped me off at the end.

image.png

If we look down the side street you can see a blue shop, which was on the corner of the street that I lived on and my favourite shop in Burntisland. Do you know what it sold?

image.png

Back to the High Street and I said that Burtisland High Street was bucking the trend. There used to be two banks and a post office. Last year saw the second and last bank close down, however the buildings were not left vacant, shops moved in.

image.png

However just before Christmas it turned out that landlord of Murdochs where the part time Post Office was, jacked up the rent and so the Post Office as you can see is not there. They are looking for a new leasee though.

image.png

It is not all shops and libraries on the High Street, there is this Museum of Communication.

image.png

It is fun and kids love to explore the art of communication, and see how us old fogies used to communicate!

image.png

One other great point going early, is the lack of people. The town has a great community feel to it, even though it is a tourist town in the summer, people still know each other.

I have known people over the years to have taken their own lives, so I think it is great now that Mental Health is talked about so openly, and there are lots of groups and chats which is a great thing.

image.png

The High Street is not just about humans, oh no, there is this wonderful dog shop. They actually are active and visit a lot of farmers markets as well.

image.png

Next to the dog shop we have the Talented Witches, I dare not say they aren't talented 🤣

image.png

They have a cracking wee map of the shops that are on the High Street. IT really is thriving and an example of what a real local community can do!

image.png

Burntisland is in the Kingdom of Fife, and amusements in this case are fruit machines and games. This place is mobbed in the Summer.

image.png

Of course there are places to eat, and being Chinese New Year I thought I would show you the best of the two Chinese food take ways (we say carry oots;)

image.png

I popped into the butchers and stocked up!

image.png

Opposite was the fishmonger, not sure if he was open or just having a delivery!

image.png

To the right of him is a greengrocer, or a fruit and veg seller, I told you the High Street was buzzing.

There is even a dry cleaners!

image.png

Do you know my new larger town does not even have a laundrette!

Right time to get my medicines!!!

image.png

Oh fluff me! They were closed...

image.png

I was one minute early. They opened and I got my meds.

A quick coffee?

Why not!

image.png

They were closed too!

image.png

image.png

image.png

So back to the bus stop and overlooking The Links and the bay. When the sunshine the beach is gorgeous!

image.png

This is also my contribution to #wednesdaywalk from the terrific @tattoodjay

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

The vibe in your town mesmerized me. What caught my attention was the library. And anyway, despite the advancement in technology and the more accessible advertisements, I think print media has never been gone. It still works, since people still love to read news and ads through papers.

Always take care & be safe. 😊

I love a library, although now they are so much more than just books!
You are right print media is still with us, just not as popular with the decline in magazines and newspapers!
Salamat for visiting Cherry and you too be safe and take care😁

Ohooo, having a walk every two months to get your meds is worth it no. You can see a lot with that walking. And my favorite shop in those you have mentioned above is the one that sells foods haha. Those pastry looks yummy.

You were an early riser to get your meds this time, Super Ed!!! I'd love to go to that talented witch's store, jaja. I'm sure I'd get something to improve my talents 😂

Where you live there is no laundromat? That's weird. Here they are scarce but since electricity is cheap it is common for people to have a washer and dryer. But there I thought it was rare to have a dryer and common to have a laundromat nearby.

Yes I was back home before 10 Super Eli🤣
Wel most people here have a washing machine and dryer. People want to put a self service one in the car park at Morrisons, but the council said no! If you want to wash large things you are screwed!

If you want to wash large things you are screwed!

That must be a problem, plus the weather there doesn't help much, right?

What a walk Tito Ed, and it looked like it rained earlier prior to your walk. They seem to love the color blue there hehe!

This looks like a cool little town. My wife and I live in a small town that doesn't have a lot of the stuff you might desire. The good thing is we have three larger towns pretty equidistant in each direction, so we can go this way or that to get what we need. It takes 10 to 15 minutes, but it isn't too bad. Very nice shots! I would have guessed your favorite store was the butcher. Maybe that's just mine!

I think the sign says books. I'm hoping it's porn! 😂 (just kidding).

Believe it or not, over the course of the last year, I have come across not one, but two - yes, two - small, private book stores in great locations. They're not close to me, but they were bookstores. The only bookstore near me is the university book store which sells text books. Alas.

You have an awesome looking town. Very jealous, I am.
