Christmas beach and promenade walk in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

avatar

Hello Walkers and Hivians

Today is the 28th of December and it is the last Wednesday in 2022, which means that it is time to post my last Wednesday Walk of 2022.

I was out last week going to do some last minute Christmas shopping, so I decided to walk to town via the sea front or esplanade.

So come join in as we take a stroll along Kirkcaldy promenade in Fife, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

fife kirkcaldy beach.jpg

The weather was pretty good for this time of year which was I decided to take the scenic route to town!

image.png

The water is the Firth of Forth and it is a shipping route to the North Sea and beyond.

image.png

We do have a huge refinery up the coast and that is why we see so many LPG tankers going up and down the coast. Keep an eye on the tanker position as we take our walk.

Do you see the rock in the background, it always reminds me of the rock of Gilbraltar.

image.png

Today we had a oil platform that was waiting to move somewhere. They look quite hospitable when they are this close to the shore, but trust me when you are one in the height of a Scottish winter hundred miles offshore then they become quite a hostile place to be!

image.png

Enough of the water, what about the beach, in the distance is Seafield and many a summertime walk for me. Today though, we are going to do a 180 degree turn about!

image.png

As we do so, we turn past what I call the Kirkcaldy rockies!

image.png

In the distance are the town's three tower blocks. If you have a flat overlooking the sea then I think you have a pretty decent view. What do you think?

image.png

Back to the beach though, and there were surprisingly few birds around. I hope avian flu has not struck again. I know our offshore bird colonies have took an absolute beating this year. This raven was on the scrounge and about to pick through some paper rubbish.

image.png

Here we are walking along the esplanade. People living on a coast take The Fresh Air for granted, but for me it is just a breath of fresh air living on the coast.

In all my years I have never got my head around living in a landlocked place.

image.png

There is a village with a harbour in the distance and somewhere @dreemsteem and @samsmith1971 will get to know more about next month I hope you are feeling better Sam.

image.png

Back to our walk and the Esplanade. Jumping on the European bandwagon, there is a little selection of keepfit equipment on the promenade. It is so rare that I see anyone use it, which is great as it means I can have a shot. I do like the crosswalker one and it gets the heart beat going.

image.png

One thing I did not know is that esplanade was built in 1922/1923 so it is 100 hundred years young already. It is in pretty condition for being a centurian I think!

Did you read the sign?

Let me know why the wall was built and get a prize in the comments ...

image.png

When the sun shines, you can get a feel for the sun beaming on your back when you are doing your workout!

image.png

Remeber the big LPG tanker, well it is turning around in the water which is pretty unusual.

I know they have train spotters and plane spotters, well I wonder if they have tanker spotters. We do get quite a few that travel past us.

image.png

Before we leave the seashore I have to have one last look at the waves. Having lived close to the sea in every country I have lived in all over the world, I find the crashing of waves and sound of water so soothing.

image.png

There across the road is the shopping center or mall that I was going to. Mercat, I keep calling it Meerkat!

image.png

I thought I would blow up the sign.

We have TK Maxx, I know in the States it is TJ Maxx.

Do you have any of those stores?

image.png

Here you go @lhes this is a rosehip albeit ones coming to the end of their life.

image.png

They were on both sides of the road, and I actually prefer the bushes with rosehips as opposed to bushes with roses.

image.png

Cross the road and here we are at the back entrance to the shopping center.

I did go inside and get all my shopping done, but this is more than enough for this post!

image.png

image.png

This is my contribution to #wednesdaywalk from the terrific @tattoodjay

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

Great walk Ed. The ship/platform reminds me of the new "Prelude" off shore ship/tanker/refinery built by Shell which is off the coast of Australia. It is the largest in the world.

I am landlocked now and it is hard to get used to having lived mostly near the sea.

The wall was built to relieve unemployment!

Well those just grow by the side of the road, I think people grow them purposefully, a bit like rose growers!

Now I am wondering

Beautiful and refreshing walk Tito Ed! I can almost smell the beach and the breeze that comes from it. Thank you for this wonderful tour!

It is so thoughtful of the government to have built that wall even during the great depression just so they can relieve unemployment.

a Beautiful walk, and yes having a flat with a view of the sea would be nice

Cool seeing the oil platform, I can imagine how hostile it must be out on a working platform

Thanks for joining the Wednesday, I always love seeing all the walks shared from around the world, its like a virtual world tour

A delightful walk.

I have no idea why the wall was built; I can't zoom in on your photo on my phone. So I shall just keep moving 🤣 !LOL

We have TKMaxx here in Australia too. Though I only started seeing them once I moved up here to Brisbane.

I've spent very little time living right near the water, though I do love it. I love visiting it (swimmable ocean in particular) and them leaving again to retreat back into the calmer bush.

Here's to much more Wednesday walking in 2023.🙂

Ah you call them TK too.
I always follow the water, and funnily enough the only place I have been to or lived in Autralia was Perth.

Beautiful shots! We get quite a few freighters around where I live in the Great Lakes. My dad was just telling me the other day that they aren't going to make them as big as they used to. It's too hard to navigate them or something. Not worth the extra capacity I guess.

I do want to go back to the beach now, too. Or at least the river. Somewhere with water that can hold a boat. I might need to take one of the small r/c boats to the nearby stream. 😂

There is a State park near me that has an entire circuit of exercise equipment like that along something like a two mile (4.4 km) path through the woods. It's really quite neat, though I've never seen anyone use it, either. It really is a neat idea, though.

hehe I think you should go boating and take some pics!
Ah yes they are a good idea, there used to loads of them in the South of Spain , but it is easier to use them when the weather is warm and not flipping freezing!

ooh... hello there, Ed 🤗I am feeling a lot better, thank you! Albeit still pretty weak and fatigued and I suspect that the chesty cough will remain for some time after all other symptoms have taken their leave. Looking forward to seeing you next month - wow only 3 weeks away now!!! Will be great to hang out. I enjoyed this Wednesday Walk - nice to get a little insight into the local area that we will be visiting soon. I particularly love the photo of the seaweed-strewn coastline. That's a great pic!!! And it will be great to get out walking with you too. I wonder if you will introduce us to your duck buddies? and/or whether you will be up for a day in Edinburgh💗 !LUV !ALIVE !PIZZA

We're pretty much the same, Uncle. I also find the sound of the waves so soothing. It's like a lullaby in my ears everytime I visit the sea. I never get to enjoy my stay there since I feel like sleeping hearing the waves.

Anyway, just curious about those rosehips. Do they have flowers of roses first before they have withered like that? Or it is just its name and a different plant? Need some answers here. 😄

hehe Ayane yeah the waves are so soothing although I don't want to sleep, I will just go home hehe as I am about 12 minute walk from the sea.

ah rosehips well they are the fruit of the rose plant. Every rose blossom that is left unpicked will eventually develop a rosehip after the flower fades away...

Oh! Now I know. Maybe, roses at your place are of different variety. Ours don't develop a fruit when left unpick haha. They just wither along with the petals.

Ah they have to be special rose bushes though, perhaps yours need to be made special first...
