Do you know your Pica Pica from your Magpie

Hello Hello fans of the feathered friends

It seems that we are marching into March and potentially into Spring!

However, before I get out and about for Spring I want to share with you some pictures of one of my favourite birds.

Because, you know, sharing is caring!

This is my post for the wonderful @nelinoeva inspired Feathered Friends - Show Me A Photo Contest Round 107

This week is a CORVIDAE theme week.

Corvidae, the family of birds also known as Corvids or Crow family, represented by crows, ravens, rooks, jays, jackdaws, magpies, nutcrackers, treepies, choughs.

I do like Corvidae I cannot lie and often share pictures of jackdaws ravens rooks and crows.

Today however, it is all about Magpies!

They often get a bad rap!

Magpies, they are nothing but thieves I hear you say!

I have been fascinated them since I was a bairn!

Maybe it is because I am drawn to shiny things as well!

I will share some fun facts about magpies as we saunter through this post...

These fun facts will be taken from the RSPB site

Magpies usually breed from two years old, although some may breed at one year. They build large, domed nests in thorny bushes or high up in tall trees.

One reason that I may like the magpies so much is that magpies seem to be jacks of all trades 🤣

They are scavengers, predators and pest-destroyers and their challenging, almost arrogant attitude has won them few friends.

I just love the long tail that they have.

We think of them as being only black and white.

Did you know the Scientific name for the Magie is Pica pica

But when you look at them close-up their black plumage takes on an altogether more colourful hue with a purplish-blue iridescent sheen to the wing feathers and a green gloss to the tail.

I think of them as black and white with a touch of blue!

That was so close to being my favourite shot, but of course when I got the zoom in shot them bam shot was gone :(

I feed these particular Magpies at my local park Beveridge Park

More food that Hive pays for!

So thanks to everyone that supports my posts, you are also supporting the birds!

I think the original post from Neli is to have a picture of one bird, so I shall put that shot above as the picture to be entered for the contest ☝️☝️☝️ I love how we can see the sheen clearly!

Do you remember my wing shot that was screwed up, can you guess what my attention was on?

See below ....

How fluffing cute is Sammy the Squirrel!

So you can see why my attention wandered for a minute!

My last picture is appropriate and one to leave you with as we part waves on this post!

I hope you enjoyed reading and seeing some Magpie information courtesy of myself and the RSPB

I am a member of the RSPB, something else that Hive pays for, do you have a favourite bird or animal charity?

Absolutely gorgeous birds. Very blue.

Did you know the Australian magpie is very different from yours! Much more bold, playful and larger, about the size of a crow. Their song is just gorgeous and very reminscent of the Aussie bush.

Oh how cool is that. The markings are different as well. Ours are flightly and would not sing like that nor be so close to you!

Love it!

Yeah they can be sooooo playful, swinging from the washing lines, trees, stealing bits of my outdoor mat, coming down to wash in the birdbath - they are truly special birds and apart from when they dive bomb you in Spring (ouch) they are reallly loved.

They don't divebomb people they know though, so our resident maggies, who must have been in the area for decades, know we don't mean harm so they don't bomb us.

Excellent magpie photos! I do wish we had them here! The pink dot on this range map is where I am. So close to Magpies.

We have our good selection of birds. I think Blue jay birds are part of the Corvidae, we have those here.

You said a picture below, while pointing upwards 👆 😂😂😂

I do love magpies too. One of them is always coming to inspect my garden after any work I do there. Such a nosy little things!

I cringe when I see the little birdied that become their trophy, but I can’t stop loving them. Just shiny things I love 😍💙

I find birds hard to photograph as they moved quickly..then the outcome was blurred pictures 🤣. Maybe because I am using a cellphone 📱.

Finally, Sammy was back?

That's a dang well fed squirrel there. Like me he doesn't appear to be missing any meals. Beautiful shots of the birds. I'd love to say that Spring is around the corner, but we are supposed to get maybe 15 more inches of show tonight!

Oh yes, magpies love to steal shiny things, but they also can be very noisy.
There are lots of them here in our local park. But they prefer to be away and I have hard time to photograph them. 🙂

You have captured them so nicely. And the interruptive squirrel. 🙂

Yeah they can be noisy, they are tricky to photograph, as they don't really hang around like the pigeons do!

I like the black and white with a touch of blue description. Fits perfectly. I like the part where the wings are spread and see all its lovely colors. Pica-pica here in our country is what we call finger food or little snacks :D Cute squirrel!

Magpies are pretty cool. Did you know that you dont get them on the north coast of Scotland ? I've never seen one there - and I only ever saw them when I started venturing further south in Scotland. I always started noting them more from about Pitlochry/Perth and further south, but not so much above that, and as said - none at all on the north coast !

Yeah there are parts of the States where they are not really present.
They do get affected by the weather, cracking birds though!
