This week sees the start of the Women's World Cup and I was writing a guide post for this when I came across the list of countries that are playing.
One of the countries is Nigeria, with me knowing so many Nigerians on Hive that Sade popped into my head.
Or more accurately Helen Folasade Adu who was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, but is a native of Ekiti State.
Most of you will know her as Sade.
This first tune is from their first album Diamond Life and pretty much propelled them to stardom!
Sade - Smooth Operator (1984)
Her band was also called Sade and Smooth Operator is one of their most popular and iconic songs.
When I was graduating I went along to a BP open night at the Sheraton hotel. We had to sit through the usual we are so fluffing awesome spiel, but they did have a free bar.
Game on I thought and BP being a big oil company had hired a function room in the Sheraton Hotel in Edinburgh.
The Sheraton was right opposite The Usher Hall and who happened to be playing at The Usher Hall ... yep Sade.
Who happened to ask someone at the bar how to pronounce Edinburgh properly? Quite bizarre as she moved to England at the age of 4. Ah well I wonder who was the Smooth Operator!
Yep Sade asked me, and bought me a beer as a thank you!
What a voice she had and she was a fluffing sulty sexy looker too I can tell you that!
Sade - The Sweetest Taboo
The Sweetest Taboo was the lead single for their second album which was released in 1985.
The following year, 1986 the band won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and so Sade became the first Nigerian-born artiste to win a Grammy Award when she was named Best New Artist. In 2023, Sade was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Pretty fluffing cool, the sad thing is I never saw her perform music live.
Sade - Cherish The Day
Cherish The Day is from the Love Deluxe album. If you know me then you will know I am all about living in the moment and appreciating what we have got.
I think it is pretty cool with the message of cherishing life. It is as relevant now as when it was released.
One interesting thing about this tune is that the band kept the music side of the song soft and understated so that Sade's vocals can shine.
Her voice is for me instantly recognisable as are the band musically.
Bonus tune Sade - Paradise
Wow I just realised I am blessing you with songs from different albums.
Paradise is from the Stronger Than Pride album and has an r&b, soul and funk sound.
This has become a bit of a signature song of theirs and don't you want to dance to it on the beach with sand in between your toes?

You've totally made my day with these tunes. And it's particularly uncanny how I was watching a video edit with smooth operator as the background tune so yeah, it's definitely my best. It was like stepping into a movie of sorts. I'd never pegged her as a Nigerian but it has absolutely blown my mind that such a talented musician is a homegirl.

That's an awesome story! I don't think I have ever brushed elbows with someone quite that famous. Maybe once in Nashville, but I don't know if that really counts. Sade has an amazing voice. I think if you never get another story that awesome to tell, you are still doing pretty good!

Eh Eh big T! I'm really glad I was tagged on this post. My love for songs from the 80's actually brought "smooth operator" to me some time ago but that was where it ended. I really love the track the first time I listen to it and now I hear she's Nigerian? Really classic! She's definitely being added to my playlist 😄

My mom told me the hairstyle Sade in Nigeria was inspired by her. Did you know @jhymi? She doesn’t even look Nigerian but I knew about her. My mom enjoyed listening to her and would tell me. Ironic. My friend received a free beer from the woman I heard stories about. She’s beautiful and sexy too.
