πŸŽ„ Silver Stackers Twelve Days of Christmas- Day 5πŸŽ„

Today I'm going to continue on with the Silver Gold Stackers Twelve Days of Christmas wish list. It's a way to share what you might like to receive from your secret Santa or even under the tree come Christmas. While I was living in the Caribbean I began collecting silver coins from the different islands. These days there are many more options available than when I lived there more than 20 years ago.

My coin on the wish list for day five is another animal coin, this one is produced for the Cayman Islands. This is one of the few places I have never visited, as staying there was just too expensive when I was living in the islands, but I've seen pictures and it looks gorgeous. The coin I've chosen is the Loggerhead Sea Turtle produced by the Scottsdale mint. Just have a look at this work of art:

About the coin:

From numista.com

I have always loved animal coins and sea turtles are really cool animals. The detailing on this coin is amazing, truly a silver work of art. You can see just how much focus was put into the design of the reef behind the turtle and the waves around the edges and on the obverse of the coin. I would absolutely love to receive this one for Christmas! Plus the asking price is only $36 dollars so it isn't a bank breaker which is important!

Such beautiful animals! These sea turtles live around the world in temperate climates, especially in tropical waters. I have had the luck to see one once along a reef while scuba diving in the Caribbean. These creatures spend most of their adult life out in open water and only the female ever comes ashore briefly to lay her eggs. So reef diving is usually the best chance you'll have to see one in the wild.

These turtles are considered a threatened species and considered either endangered or protected worldwide. They only lay four to six eggs every few years and predators are eager to eat the eggs so many don't ever hatch. An adult turtle has few natural predators due to their size and protective shell, but very large sharks, especially tigers, love to eat them. They can grow up to 35 inches (90 cm) and weigh up to 300 pounds (135 kg) as adults.

Really your best chance to see them is in captivity these days, and I have seen one in an aquarium in Long Beach, California. They occasionally rescue turtles who are injured, nurse them back to health to release them back into the wild. Hopefully the turtles will make a comeback now that they're more protected from human hunting and through programs to protect the eggs from predators. It would be a shame to lose these beautiful creatures to extinction.

That will wrap up my day five on the Christmas wish list post. I hope you liked the coin and enjoyed seeing the real turtle as well. I've always loved animal coins, it gives you a chance to learn more about the animals in addition to just owning the silver. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. I want to thank all of you for all of your support, I really do appreciated it! Stay safe everyone!

I actually think I like the back of that one more than I like the side with the turtle. Is that crazy?

That coin is amazing, the obverse with the waves and the Cayman seal, it's a work of art. I'm sure it's all computer generated and probably engraved the same way, but it is amazing what they can do today on these coins!

If only I could afford everything I would like for Christmas! I love sea turtles, they are amazing creatures. The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach released one back into the wild this year that they nursed back to health. It's nice to know that efforts are being made to help them out!

The detail on the turtle on the coin is lovely, is seems like the craft for such a piece must've taken some effort. The coin says one dollar turtle coin, but the asking price is 36$, how come?

I imagine that a lot is done by computer now, probably even the engraving of the planchets to strike the coins. On this coin they capped production at 25K, so it's not really rare, but it's a work of art. It's also on ounce of silver which in the long run is really the most value in the coin itself.

The $36 is only about five dollars over the silver price, so the cost of producing them must be pretty low.

Some time ago you made me a comment, that you were here in Venezuela, I hope you have heard or visited what is known as Morrocoy National Park, well in that park is one of the places where some sea turtles have their nesting every so often.

This beautiful coin made me remember when I was there many years ago to be more exact in 1996 for a release of thousands of turtles by an organization that was sponsored by the bank I worked for.

It is something very nice to see how they rescued all the eggs to avoid the looting by those who plunder the nests of turtle eggs.

Wow, I almost made a post, LOL
