A Beautiful Silver Half Dime from 1853

This morning I realized that it's been awhile since I shared any of my older US coin collection. The Goddess of Liberty used to show up on all US coins in the early days of the country, and rightly so as the US had declared independence from England not long before. I've always enjoyed the dollar and half dollar coins because of their Liberty design and size, but I've picked up some smaller denominations over the years as well.

This one is one I picked up for a good deal many years ago, and is very interesting because it's not a nickel (which appeared in 1866), but a "half dime" and is made of 90% silver. This has the Seated Liberty design which was a beautiful and long lived feature on coins from the United States. There were many variants made from 1837 until 1873, some of which are rare and very expensive. This one sadly is not one of them!

About the coin:

From numista.com

I have always love the Seated Liberty design, and the Liberty coinage in general. This is a nice little coin and still has some nice details, and I'm glad I have it. I think I only own a couple of these as I never actively collected them. I preferred the larger denominations. It would be fun to collect an entire series of these but there are some very rare variants and proofs that are extremely expensive. I'm not nearly rich enough to even consider it!

Christian Gobrecht

Wikipedia.com

Born in 1785 in Hanover, Pennsylvania to a German immigrant father. He apprenticed in engraving in Manheim, Pennsylvania but moved to Philadelphia with his sights set on engraving for the US Mint. He became the second engraver of the mint in 1835 after the Chief Engraver suffered a stroke, essentially doing the job of Chief Engraver without the title. He engraved the Seated Liberty design based on drawing by Thomas Sully for the Golbrect dollar that was made in small quantities from 1836-1839. Here's one of the few remaining in excellent condition:

1836 Gobrecht Dollar, from Numista.com

Isn't that beautiful?

This design became the Seated Liberty design on many US coins from 1836 until 1891. Golbrecht died in 1844 but his design lived on for another 45 years in US coins. It's a shame that Liberty was ever removed form US coinage and in my opinion should return and replace all the president coins... Just my opinion! It feels like president worship instead of savoring and loving Liberty which we lose more and more each year.

That will just about wrap us my post for today. I hope you enjoyed learning a little about the half dime, the predecessor to the nickel we have today. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. I would like to thank all of you for your support, it is truly appreciated. Without all of you I never would have managed to accumulate 5,000 HP which I recently passed on my way to 6,000! Have a great week everyone!

Oh wow, I don't think I have ever seen one of those before. That is pretty cool. The different itterration of Liberty is pretty interesting too. I am hoping to finally make it to the silver store tomorrow after work.

I've always been a huge fan of early American coins, but the nice ones tend to be really expensive. I saw one proof half dime priced at over $4500, just crazy money! I hope you can find some good stuff while you're there! Half dimes aren't usually too expensive if you shop around unless they're near mint state.

Very interesting. I am not sure I have even heard of a half dime before now. Maybe I have, but I don't really recall. I think the designs were a bit better back then though those state quarters had some keepers.

Nickels only came along after the Civil War and there was less silver to put into coinage, so they made a nickel out of nickel! lol

I love these! And I agree that our coins should represent liberty rather than presidents.

Liberty is the whole point of our country, that's why all the coins with historical figures really sucks!

It actually the historical figures themselves that suck not just the coins

The half dimes are really cool, back when they were made with silver! I don't know if Canada made a half dime or not, something interesting to look up!

Thanks! A six pack of beer you say, I'm in! The dollar is really cool, but buying one of those today they start at around $15,000 US, and then up from there for the really nice ones... If I were a rich man.... To quote fiddler on the roof!

Really, I'd favor still calling the 5 cent coin a half-dime. "half dime" linguistically and etymologically makes a lot of sense within the context of our money system. But "nickel"?? They just offhand named it after the metal when silver became too expensive during the civil war so they needed to change metals.

Anyway, beautiful coin! I wish using Liberty would come back into style and replace all these dead presidents currently making US money so ugly.

US money really is just plain ugly. Who really wants these guys on the money. The US put Liberty on the money because they wanted to move away from the king or queen on the money. Now see what we have, former presidents or historical figures, and Liberty has been thrown in the trash...

The term half dime makes a lot more sense than the nickel. It should have styed as a half dime in my opinion, but I find that my opinion doesn't matter a whole lot with those in power....

The "president" doesn't want you worshipping liberty.. He's trying to take that away..

0

Exactly! And they have all been doing it slowly ever since Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which incidentally he didn't have the authority to even order. Congress had to approve it after the fact! lol But now president's think they rule like a king, and liberty is the last thing they want to the people to even think about. Unfortunately we started the nation to escape a tyrant and now we have two parties that run everything and they are full of tyrants. It's really sad if you think about it...

Comment Rewarder works great and does overcome that dust limit limitation so people get rewarded. Bu they get rewarded in the form of Hive and HBD and doesn't really add onto your vote. So if it's not at least $0.02 it still goes to dust but everyone gets rewarded by a percentage of your post's revenue.
