A Bluegill Silver Find

Happy Monday everyone. I've never been a big Monday fan, but it seems to come along every week anyway... I have been working on sprucing up the yard this last week which is a lot harder than it used to be when I was twenty-one. As a matter of fact a lot of things were easier when I was twenty-one! I'm still waiting for the medical miracle drug that makes you twenty years younger.

Over the last couple weeks I have been sharing some items that I picked up in a jewelry shop in Long Beach, California. The owner buys silver and gold from people, most of which ends up being sent off the be melted down. The items he things I might like he keeps around for a few weeks. Sometimes he has nothing interesting at all and other times there's more nice stuff than fits in my budget. Some time back I picked up a couple of interesting silver rounds with some fish on them, they were pure silver and an ounce a piece so I bought them and only paid spot which was great!

These were interesting primarily because they came from a club I've never heard of before, the North American Fishing Club. If you know anything about it feel free to chime in! The one I'll share to day it the bluegill fish:

About the round:
Diameter 39 mm
Weight: One Troy ounce
Metal: 99.9% silver
Mint: Unknown
Strike: Proof Like

The North American Fishing Club was founded in 1988. At some point they produced a bunch of solid silver and silver plated rounds. I was unable to figure out the mint that produced them, but they did good work. From what I've read it was a club you buy a lifetime membership and you got a monthly journal and some other perks. They were bought out by Scout media and things apparently changed once Scout was acquired by some Russian investors. Scout shortly after declared bankruptcy and that was the end of the fishing club.

You can however pick up these silver rounds still, I personally wouldn't pay much more than spot on these. I just don't see a huge collectors market in the future because they are pretty obscure. Just make sure if you do buy some that it is the pure silver and not the silver plated version!

What I love about fish and animal coins it I get to share a little something about the species. Bluegill are native to North America basically everyplace east of the Rocky Mountains. However they have been introduced to almost every continent except Australia and Antarctica and have become an invasive species in many places. They love shallow ponds with a lot of aquatic plants and have been found in some salt water bays indicating they can tolerate some salt water which is unusual for a freshwater fish. They can grow up to 16 inches (41 cm) and up to 4 1/2 pounds (2 kg.)

They are very popular among fisherman since they are a great tasting fish. That's part of the reason they have been spread to so many places around the globe. As a kid I used to fish for these at a pond that was stocked with them not too far from home. They are a lot of fun to catch and like to hide in the aquatic plants and under logs. They eat small insects, small fish, and even plants if it's short on food supplies.

They are fun to catch, so if you are a fisherman and haven't given them a try I highly recommend them!

That will just about wrap up my post for today. I hope you enjoyed enjoyed the silver round and learning a little about bluegills. If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments please feel free to leave them below. Have a great Monday!

That's a nice round and it's great that you just paid spot price for it!
You always seem to find these nice things around in your area, I hope to find these type of sellers one day too :)

This guy I've known for years and he gives me most stuff at spot unless it's clearly more valuable. He cares about jewelry and doesn't have time to look up prices all day. It's a nice deal!

When you find that miracle drug that makes you 21 again, signed me up as well Lol!😇
Bluegills were the most popular fish back in Cincinnati, I can remember fishing many a day with my grandfather, catching lots of bluegill!😊

I can't wait for that drug! Bluegills are a fun one to catch. I've not done much fresh water fishing in years, I just got so into ocean fishing that I never really got back into freshwater.

Around Cincinnati I bet they were popular, they're just so many in the rivers and lakes out that way!

I do miss fishing, I haven’t done it for a long time.🙄
In some of the lakes back in Cincinnati, you could catch dozens of bluegill a day!😊

That's a cool round, I have done a lot of bluegill fishing in the past.
There's nothing like getting out on a nice quiet lake or pond with an
ultra lite rod catching lots of bluegill, it's very relaxing and fun.

Nice and quiet is the key! Getting away from all the noise of the city is just so nice. Bluegills are fun to catch, they sure put up a bit of a fight. I agree, very relaxing!

I mowed our lawn for the first time this year over the weekend. I was just talking to my wife about how every year it seems to get a little harder. We only have about .25 acres and I thought it would be good exercise to just get a push mower (not self propelled), but I have to take more and more breaks lately! That's a really awesome round! I've caught and eaten my fair share of Bluegill. They put up a bit of a fight too, which as you said makes them fun!

That's a feeling I know all too well. It's kind of depressing when you can't to things nearly as easily as even five years ago! It may be time to invest in the self propelled variety!

They do put a nice fight, it's been quite awhile since I caught one though. They do taste great though!

They say that if you don't have debts you are not a person, I don't agree, when you have a good contact and you trust them like you do, it is better to do a business like that

Much better to do business with someone you know, plus he has a testing machine that proves purity before I buy anything. Buying on eBay can be risky, there are some dishonest people out there!

I love the fish rounds, especially the freshwater stuff I catch. I am used to seeing the ocean fish, but not Blue Gills. I will have to keep an eye out for stuff like this. Great unique funds.

This was just a lucky find, and I loved seeing bluegills on the round. I bought another one that he had there that day too, it was a cutthroat trout. I'll be doing that one sometime down the road here. I wouldn't pay much over spot if you find them, I'm just not sure the collector market is big enough to be worth paying a premium. They are cool though since they are both fish I have loved to catch over the years, especially when I was young!

That's just it, I would love to find sunfish, crappie, perch, walleye, Northern ones all the fish I catch just for the novelty of it. Not looking to spend a huge premium either but I don't think I've ever seen anything like this before so it gives me something to keep an eye out for
