A Silver Batman Comic #251

Some days of the week I tend to participate in events like Three Tune Tuesday, Nineties Friday, or Saturday Savers. But Monday is wide open to talk about whatever I happen to feel like. The down side of this strategy is that every now and again I really don't have anything interesting to talk about so I end up taking the day off. Today I've decided to avoid that temptation and talk about something interesting I found a couple weeks back but never bothered to put together in a post. So, here we go!

Comic books weren't ever a part of my life growing up. I grew up in a rural area with no comic book stores anywhere nearby as I mentioned in a previous post. My only real exposure to superheroes came from reruns of the old Adam West Batman series from the 1960's until Christopher Reeve was cast in the first Superman movie back in 1978. I never saw it in the theater but I must have seen in at home on VHS rented from a video rental store back in the stone ages when they still existed.

That all changed in 1989 when Time Burton created the first Batman movie starring Michael Keaton. That's when I really become more of a fan. It's a shame I didn't collect some of the comic books from back in the seventies because they're worth a small fortune now.

Recently I came across another superhero coin that doesn't look like a coin at all. Instead it looks like a comic book cover, and is made of five Troy ounces of pure silver. Once again it's produced by the tiny island nation on Niue in the south Pacific Ocean. It was cool enough that I clicked on it for some more details. It is a copy of the cover of Batman #251 published in September of 1973. Have a look:

About the coin:

from numista.com

What is particularly interesting is the mintage of this new coin, there will only be 200 produced. That leaves a serious scarcity possibility and prices will likely skyrocket in the future. But there is a catch, and it is a big one. The asking price for these five ounces of silver is $499... As cool as it is it's not in my budget for this year. Maybe if Hive shoots up to five dollars things may look differently!

The original comic book itself in graded condition of 7.5 starts at about $600. So this may be a case that the comic book itself is just about the same price as the coin. Needless to say neither is in my current budget!

Returning back to the original Batman movie from 1989...

When Michael Keaton was cast for the role many comic fans were really upset believing Keaton could never make a good Batman. Keaton and Burton proved them wrong. Jack Nicholson was added to the cast as the Joker and he put on an amazing performance. Tim Burton created a Gotham City that was always dark, never bright and sunny just like the comics. It was a great film, and It's still one of my favorite superhero movies ever made.

Plus they created a really cool Batmobile just for the movie. This car just looks awesome, I would love to have one of these to drive around! I know some people who have seen it at car shows over the years, I never had the chance though. One of these days maybe it will be in a car show not to far from where I live...

Back in 2008 I was staying in Tucson, Arizona at a hotel while doing some contract work. One afternoon I a large truck, maybe an Ford F-150, pulled into the parking lot hauling a covered car on a trailer. I started up a conversation with the driver and asked what he happened to hauling. Turns out he was transporting one of the Batmobiles used in filming Christian Bale's "Batman Begins". It was really cool vehicle, I did take some pictures but the ex-wife stole the device they were on (along with most everything else I owned) and I didn't have backups. So I had to use this picture I found online, pretty cool isn't it?

I know that there are some crazy collector with a lot of money out there, but 600$ for a comic book is too much for me. And to keep it that the current grade, you should always keep it shuts isn't it. Interesting to buy an expensive comic book, and not reading it. !LOLZ

I would also love to see Hive go upward to 5, at least to 3 like the previous ath.

Definitely an investment I will likely never make! But there are hard core collectors who may up to a million dollars for one of these comics...

I've only seen the old bat mobile from the sixties in real life. Those after that period would be cool to see. I seen the original SuperMan movie on TV. The days of the knob with a few channels to choose from made possible with an oversized antenna on the roof, haha.

I remember those days well, you could only watch what the antenna could pick up. For UHF you could use one of the circular ones attached to the TV. That really does seem like the stone ages...

Yup I remember UHF those additional channels had some cartoons on them that the major networks did not after school

"Holy Counterfeit cash Batman, the US Dollar is inflating away!"
We seen a handful of Batman silver but will it entice those comic collectors over to gold and silver? 🦇
