Another Silver Coin from the British Virgin Islands / Re-blog lottery!

As most of you know I love treasure hunting! Back when I lived in the Caribbean I was diving as much as possible to see the reefs and poke around for treasure while I was at it. It was truly a great place to live with so many great beaches and places to dive or snorkel. Plus you get just about much fresh seafood as you can eat, most of it I caught myself making it a lot more fun!

Back a couple months ago I started to share some coins from the British Virgin Islands that were minted back in the 1985. I thought it might be fun to pick up on where I left off in the series. I haven't been following an exact order, mostly just puling up some of my images I photographed several years back for insurance purposes. This one is a beautiful coin!

About the coin:

From numista.com

This coin comes from the Sunken Ship Treasures of the Caribbean series, which are all beautiful coins commemorating all of the sunken ships laden with treasure that still ay at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea. These were minted in 1985 by the Franklin Mint in Wawa, Pennsylvania, US. The whole series is beautiful, I have most of them but I'm still missing a few still. This one is the crossed cannons which is fitting because the reefs and seafloor of the region are littered with old cannons lost with sunken ships or were thrown overboard for one reason or another. I found one myself with my diving buddy off of Miami. Florida, but since our boat was too small we couldn't recover it. But no gold or silver coins were anywhere nearby unfortunately, so no pirate treasure...

These coins are fun to collect and really not too expensive. It makes them great for collecting or stacking. Since they were minted in sterling silver they do tend to spot up a bit, and I suspect many spent several years in the Caribbean with the high humidity causing some tarnishing. I love the sea themed coins as well as lost treasures so I have enjoyed hunting them down over the years.

I know it's January in the northern hemisphere and that always means cold and lots of snow. For those down below the equator it's the opposite! But for those of us still trapped in winter I thought I would share some awesome pictures of the British Virgin Islands. The first is a beautiful beach, and the second a picture from the baths on Virgin Gorda. If you haven't been to Virgin Gorda put it on your to do list, you won't regret it!

bvi.org
Just look at that water... What else can I say?
glasshousebvi.com
The baths of Virgin Gorda, they're a series of small pools and caves right along the coastline.

I hope you enjoyed my continuation on the British Virgin Islands silver coin series from 1985. If you have any suggestions, questions, or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Nice coin. I used to have a couple of coins that came from a wreck off of the Bahamas, but you know life sometimes makes you sell stuff, lol. These days, I am just hitting the generic rounds to save the premiums, lol.

Cool coin! I'm a former diver myself. I dove in Guam and Cuba. Never found any treasure, but got a nice collection of shells.

I've never dived Guam or Cuba. Back when I was living in the Caribbean, Cuba was still hard to visit for American citizens. I had friends from Russia down there who went twice a year, they could go buy we couldn't (easily anyway...) I've heard Guam is a great place to dive. How was diving out there?

Guam is where I got certified for basic and then advanced open water. I lived there three years and found the diving to be spectacular. I moved to California, sold all my diving gear at a yard sale, and then was sent to GITMO for three months. Not as a prisoner :) I was there in the 90's when Cuban and Haitian refugees were housed there. Lucky me, the base exchange had a Christmas sale on dive gear, so I was able to dive and snorkel there. More turtles and fewer sharks than Guam. Both places were nice. Haven't been diving since :(

A beautiful place with adventure yet to be discovered beneath her waves. Keeping in mind that my frigate will have a shallower designed draft to navigate around treacherous reefs. Would you be allowed to remove cannons from the reefs if you could? I can imagine most weighing tons.

With the right permits, large enough boat and winch you can do it. It was just to cost prohibitive so it's still down there as far as I know. The reefs around the Virgin Islands are pretty shallow so you will need a frigate with a very shallow draft!

At least get some credit for cleaning up the reef of Cannons. Maybe add a few extra guns to my Frigate.

I am headed down to the VI in just a couple months (St. Thomas) on a cruise. It'll be good to get back there, as it's been many years since I last visited. I had no idea that coins like this had been minted, though. I am learning a lot by paying attention to you SGS folks!

They put out some really nice coins in the British Virgins and some other nearby islands. Most are produced in the US by private mints and the governments sell them. St Thomas is a lot of fun, buy St John's is my favorite US Virgin Island. Two thirds of the island are a park and nothing can be built there so it's not crowded and beautiful! Where is your cruise making stops?

My other two stops this time around are San Juan, PR and Amber Cove, Dominican Republic. I've never actually set foot on St. John, but I did fly over/around it once in a seaplane. 😁 Have you spent a lot of time cruising, or island hopping via other methods?

I lived in Puerto Rico in the later 90's and used to island hop on the weekends as much as possible. I've been to at least half of the major islands while I was there, of course at the time Cuba was still off limits and Haiti has always been a little on the dangerous side. San Juan is always a nice stop, lots of shops in old San Juan and El Morro right there. It's been awhile since I've been to the DR, but it's fun place too. Back then while we were there we always returned with our one box limit of personal use Cuban cigars because they were really inexpensive there.

It sounds like a great trip, you should have a lot of fun!

Very nice coin! Appreciate the share. The Caribbean sounds good about right now. I think the warm weather and nice warm water would do me some good. If I just had the goods to go.

The Caribbean sounds good more and more the older I get, the problem though is the VA hospital in Puerto Rico isn't quite as good as the ones here!
