California Gold Nuggets! / Re-blog lottery

Happy Saturday everyone! Since it's the weekend I'm going to be talking about prospecting for gold and share one the the nice little nuggets I have found over the years. What I love about prospecting for gold is that sometimes you get really lucky and walk away with a lot of gold. Then there are other days where you don't find much, but it's still great to get outdoors and enjoy the mountains or the deserts.

This nice little nugget I found while metal detecting the banks of a river in Ventura County, California. It was a really slow day at first mainly finding lots of old cans and nails. I finally got a decent hit on the detector and found this at the edge of the river. It weighs just about 2 grams and is a pretty little nugget. I also found a few other really small nuggets in the area and panned the river close by and found some fine gold dust as well. It was a pretty good day! It seem like I walked away with about 4 grams of gold in total.

California has been inundated with rain over the last week, which is great new for us prospectors. It means more gold is being washed down into the rivers for us to find come spring or summer. This year could be a lot of fun!

Now one fellow in Tuolumne County, California found this little nugget while panning for gold in 2016. Just imagine 559 grams of gold! His day was much better than mine I can tell you that for sure!

That's what makes prospecting and panning so much fun, you never know when you might hit the jackpot! Once you have gold fever it's tough to rid of it. There is literally gold, silver, and lost treasures everywhere around the world, and you have to do is to look and get really lucky!

The best way to start is to find a local prospecting group. They are always helpful in helping you to know what you need to get started and will likely let you tag a long to some promising locations. Just make sure to stay safe out there, no treasure is worth dying for. I hope I'm inspiring some of you to get out and try your luck looking for gold or lost treasures, it's a lot of fun!

I wish I had known about using a metal detector when we lived in Colorado, so many Gold and Silver mines everywhere!😊

They make the work a lot easier, no panning unless you actually have some gold if you use the discriminator.

They sure would have loved to have them! The nice thing about them is you don't have pan through so much dirt and gravel unless gold is there, my detector can detect 0.1 grams of gold! Thanks!

I would love to find one like that! Most seem to be found up north around where you live. Most of the stuff down south here tends to be smaller in my experience.

Not knowing anything about it, if you did find a huge "little nugget" like that, where would you sell it to get cash? Are there places set up that buy raw gold from prospectors?

There are plenty, but one like that you would want to take to a major auction house. Because of it's size you can get much more that just the gold value. Large nuggets are very uncommon and get very high premiums.

I’ve never gone prospecting myself, mainly for the reason you mention - the addictive nature of it. I think I’d rather never know than try my hand, even once, and find myself being allured by it.
The closest I’ve come is watching some of the prospecting shows on Discovery channels. I know they’re dramatised for television purposes, but still really interesting to watch. If they’re accurate, it’s also interesting to see differences in approaches to prospecting from country to country.

Even here there are different approaches depending on the local and state laws. It's not as simple as head out to wherever, you have to know where you are allowed to search and with what equipment. It is a lot of fun to get out into nature, but with your son it would be tough to do. Some kids enjoy it once they get to be older!

Do you need to have a license or a stake on an area of land, or are there areas that casual prospectors can use in a more shared capacity?
Again, only speaking from the perspective provided by TV, but they all seem to have a stake, or claim, on certain plots and anyone else prospecting in that area is poaching.

As long as it's allowed by the government and there isn't an active (and posted) claim you can work just about anywhere. There is a river in Idaho that has claims pretty much over the whole entire river, but of course there's a lot of gold there!

Depends, nuggets most of the time you can get about twice the value of the gold at around two grams. The bigger the nugget the larger the premium. Gold dust is pretty much spot even though it's only about 22 carat.

It's a huge rush, that's what makes it so fun. But then there are trips you find next to nothing!
