Did You Know That Volcanoes Can Erupt Gold Dust?

charityxoler.weebly.com

I have always found volcanoes to be fascinating. I've always honestly wanted to watch one erupting in front of my own eyes from a safe distance away of course, but sadly I've not been that lucky so far. I have been through strong earthquakes, been in the eye of a hurricane, seen tornados, and even witnessed a mudslide pouring down the side of a mountain. But so far all the volcanos I have visited were nice and quiet at the time of my visit.

Another thing I've always wanted to do was to visit Antarctica. Why? Just to say that I have been there. It's kind of like Mt. Everest, why do they climb it, because it's there... But one of the most interesting things in Antarctica is a very active volcano by the name of Mount Erebus, one of the most active on the entire planet. It is 12, 488 feet (3,806 meters) high, so not a small hill. What sets this particular volcano apart from the rest is that as it erupts it spews 80 grams of gold into the atmosphere every single day. No other volcano on earth erupts so much gold.

Why does this volcano erupts so much gold and others don't? Scientists aren't sure why, but it must have massive gold ore deposits somewhere in the volcanic plumbing system. The gold dust has been found up to 620 miles (1000 km) away from the volcano itself. I think it would be cool to have a volcano raining gold dust down on me!

Here are some other views of the volcano when it's not exploding:

Unfortunately for all of us gold prospectors mining in Antarctica is banned by international treaties. Not that you could likely get close enough to he volcano to collect much gold because it's frequently erupting. And it's not only erupting gold, there are rocks launched out as well as molten lava. When it's not erupting it is still very cold at the south pole pretty much year round!

Then again looking at a nice pile of gold dust like that one could be very tempting! Now just thinking about the math, if it erupts 80 grams a day, 365 days a year, and just supposing it's been erupting for 500 years. That leaves us with 14,600,000 grams of gold just laying around on the ground just waiting to be found. Gold costs about $80 per gram so more than $1,168,000,000 worth of gold just laying around in Antarctica...

I can always dream...

That will do it for my post today. Kind of a treasure hunter story but not one any of us can ever collect on. It might be a better bet to search for Spanish pieces of eight along the Florida treasure coast on the sunny warm beach. I hope you found my post interesting, it sure gave me gold fever just writing it! Have a great day everyone and thank you so much for your support, it really means a lot to me!

That’s very interesting, I had no idea that volcanoes spewed out gold dust!😇
I wonder about Hawaii, where they erupt on a regular basis ?
I’m not wishing Mount Baker to blow its top……. But it is way overdue!😳

This volcano seems to be unique in that there is so much gold produced. But it's very inaccessible sadly!

I guess it only makes sense because you’re pulling magma up from deep in the Earth!
Ohh…..what a gold prospector would do for another ounce of this precious metal!😇

It's really intert. And now gives so mat questions about such eruptions. What about other volcanoes? Is it easy or not to separate gold from dust a.s.o.
All what we can is just to try to guess answers...

This one seems unique in the amount that it spews out. I'm sure others have some but not enough to catch the attention of gold miners!

That does get my imagination activated!
Have you watched the British Comedy 'The Detectorists'.
It is quite entertaining!

I haven't, I'll have to watch out for it. Where does it stream?

Wow, that is pretty impressive. It makes sense though if you consider the way the copper and other ore veins were created in the earths crust. What is the melting point of gold though? You would think it would vaporize or something due to the heat.

It must be a really rich gold mine essentially that part gets blasted out with each eruption. I'm not sure just an eruption alone would be hot enough to melt gold much in the period of time it's shot into the air, but it may do it enough to allow it to rain down gold dust? Interesting to speculate the mechanism, I just wish my backyard had that much gold!

I don't know man haven't you heard of pyroclastic flows? Apparently I have at some point in my life that I remember that term! 😃

There are hardly volcanoes in my side of the world, neither earthquake or snow. Volcano is a natural wonder, and there are people who actually host reality TV shows to record them for others to see

Eruptions are just so rare, unless you go to Hawaii where it's almost always erupting but there is is all lava as opposed to clouds of ash full of gold dust. I would love to see one in action, but from a nice distance away! Don't want to end up like the poor people of Pompei!

What makes the eruption regular in Hawaii?

Not sure, but the lava there is thinner than most places so it erupts lava only, rarely does it explode

It would be interesting to have other sources of gold like this in a natural way, not necessarily a volcano, there could be a bird that built a nest here in my house and its eggs were made of gold T_T 🤣

It doesn't hurt to dream haha

That would be pretty damn sweet! I would love to figure out the energy problem to get gold from seawater. Someday some nerd will figure it out and become stinking rich!

A good reason to dream of going to Anartica, haha. Would be tough to recover in those conditions though
