Nineties Friday, Ask Jeeves Anyone?

YouTube

Back in the 1990's before the invention of search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc. there was Ask Jeeves. It was a really cool innovation. Today it still exists as Ask.com but the giants came along and left poor old Jeeves in the dust. But it was one of the first search engines that we all take for granted today. Hard to believe there was a time before the internet and search engines, almost like the dark ages...

The nineties also brought us that wonder called the internet. And for those too young to remember the good old dial up internet connections, talk about slow! But at the time it was pretty amazing. I sure don't miss dial up connections. lol

Now for some fun movies from the 1990's!

Although Christmas has come and gone, we're still in the holiday season until New Years. In 1990 Home Alone hit the movie theaters. It was a huge success with Macaulay Culkin as the kid left at home by his family when rushing to the airport to catch a flight for their Christmas vacation. A couple of crooks trying to rob homes while the owners are out of town decide to target his house, and the kid fights back. This one is a true Christmas classic!

screenrant.com

In 1997 the original Men in Black was released starting off the trilogy of films starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. The Men in Black are a secret organization that oversees aliens living on planet earth and protecting the planet for extraterrestrial threats. Jones and Smith have great chemistry and there is plenty of action and comedy. If somehow you missed the original movie it's worth seeing, a classic film!

Now for some music from the decade.

Guns N' Roses

fanpop.com

Formed in Los Angeles in 1985 this band went from relative unknowns to superstars with the release of their album "Appetite for Destruction" in 1987. In 1991 Guns N' Roses released the albums "Use Your Illusion I & II". They were huge sellers and kicked off a highly successful world tour, I remember seeing their show in December 1992 in Santiago, Chile. One of the biggest hits from Illusion II came from a cover of a Bob Dylan song called "Knockin' On Heaven's Door".

Metallica

wall.alphacoders.com

Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 this legendary heavy metal band had had gained widespread popularity with their black album in 1991. In 1997 they released "Reload" which is their seventh studio album. They did something a little different creating a sequel to their song "The Unforgiven" off of the black album called appropriately "The Unforgiven II":

No Doubt

radioacktiva.com

Formed in Anaheim, California in 1986, this ska band found success in their album "Tragic Kingdom" in 1995. Their follow up album "Return of Saturn" was recorded in 1998 to 1999 and released in 2000. It produced multiple hit songs much like their previous outing. One of my favorites of off this album has always been "Bathwater":

The Offspring

Formed in Garden Grove, California in 1984 it took these guys a long time to make into the popular mainstream with their album "Smash". They did produce two albums prior to this with some great music if you ever feel like doing a deep dive. They released their fifth studio album in 1998 called "Americana", one of my favorites on there is "Why Don't You Get A Job?":

And since I spent most of the 1990's living in countries that really only spoke Spanish I like to include at least one or two from the decade in Spanish. One of my favorite artists is of course:

Shakira

pinterest.com

This Colombian singer/ songwriter has become one of the biggest stars in the world. Believe it or not her first two albums didn't do very well, but she finally hit gold with her third album "Pies Descalzos" (Bare Feet) in 1995. Personally I always thought she looked better as a brunette like you see here in this song, called "Estoy Aquí" (I'm Here) off of the same album.

That will do it for this edition of #ninetiesfriday , I hope you liked the flashback to the decade that is now "vintage" according to the young crowd out there (or so I have heard.) If you want participate in the weekly event feel free to create your own post about anything that is from the decade, your imagination is the limit! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thank you for all of your support, it really is great appreciated. Have a great weekend everyone!

That No Doubt song is post nineties. You loose 2 points 🤣. Just kidding. Plus it’s 2000 and a follow up to a 1995 album. Man that band messed up taking 5 years in-between releases. Not a joke! They really fucked up not having another album while that style was still kicking in 97/98.

GNR too! 1987 than 1991. they could of had a raw hard album in 1989 and oh man the drugs…

That opening topic made me think of a 1999 classic! Plus it’s Friday afternoon so turn off the answering machine! Cause…. ⬇️

Office Space was an awesome show! It really was a shame that all those bands had so many years without producing new music. A wasted opportunity for sure!

This is a Friday to remember, because you made me remember that search engine, and how it was the only thing before google and others that still exist, although I also remember one that was called Lycos, so I named it after a dog I had.

As for music, who doesn't like metallica or Guns N' Roses, and the movies you are recommending I have all seen, and if they are good, I wouldn't hesitate to see them again.

In the midst of the difficulties I may have in my country, I do what I can to be well.
Thank you for asking.

I can still hear the sound of the reverting echoing dial up as it was trying to connect Lol!🤣
How quickly things change, back, then no one could imagine where we would be today !😇😊

I'm honestly not mad about dark haired Shakira. I think it fits her really well. Man, Ask Jeeves is classic. Some of those old search engines like Web Crawler, Dog Pile, and all the other ones were so classic.

Those old search engines, I had forgotten about Dog Pile. The internet is a much faster place with so much more information now than in the past. Looking back to the 90's it feels like the dark ages!

It definitely does. There was something kind of cool about it though too. I remember spending so much time on IIRC.

Dial Up Internet thank god that is no longer a thing and if I remember well at least over here the price was like using the landline which wasn't that cheap.

Go Gunners....like I said in a previous post all grunge guys die and they are still rocking WTF??? !PIZZA

Dial up really did suck! I'm glad that's a thing of the past. A lot of those Seattle rockers had depression problems...

Ask Jeeves! Those were the days, they dropped the Jeeves to just Ask if I remember.

All great bands and films you selected.

I know my favourite and there's No Doubt about it!

No Doubt are awesome, they've performed together this year again. Maybe next year too?

They did become Ask.com making good old Jeeves a relic of the past!

Yeah I love the voice of Gwen Stefani. Never did get to see her or No Doubt live, I might look out for any future touring dates!
