Sheriff Pat Garrett Silver Strike Token

Somehow the week before Christmas has already arrived. I'm not sure where the year went but it sure went fast! This past week I finished up my Twelve Days of Christmas wish list, so many wonderful silver and gold items I would love to have. We shall see how kind Santa is the is year!

Today I decided to share one of my Silver Strike tokens that I collected some time ago. I honestly had forgotten that I had this one until I found my photos of it while looking for some Christmas pictures from when my son was a youngster. Silver Strike tokens were paid out occasionally from the Silver Strike Slot Machines. At one point you could find them in almost any casino around the world. Now there are only a few casinos that still have them. This particular token is a commemorative silver token that is generic, meaning it isn't from any casino in particular. These came from machines in Colorado and part of famous lawmen series, in the past I have shared one of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and Wild Bill Hickok. This one is of Pat Garret.

About the token:

From silverstrikers.com

This token contains just about 0.6 Troy ounces of pure silver surrounded by a brass ring. These precious metal tokens from this particular series are rather uncommon which was part of the reason I bought it initially. I love collecting these, especially from defunct casinos. Since this one has no casino attached to it I find it even more interesting personally.

Pat Garrett

Wikipedia

Pat Garrett's claim to fame was that he was the man who killed William H. Bonney (aka Billy the Kid.) The irony is that prior to this Garret and Bonney were known to be friends, and Bonney even attended Garrett's wedding. Then the Kid go caught up in the Lincoln County War where he joined the Lincoln County Regulators fighting injustices done by Sheriff William Brady. Brady was killed during a battle. Eventually everyone received clemency except for Bonnie who was sentenced to hang. However while waiting for the sentence to be carried out he escaped from jail killing the two guards in the process.

Two months later Garrett caught up with Bonnie at Fort Sumpter, New Mexico. He ambushed and killed Bonnie on July 14, 1881 at just 21 years of age. At least maybe he did. It has long been rumored that Garrett killed the wrong man and out of his friendship with Bonnie let him go. There have been many attempts over the years to exhume the bodies of both Bonnie and his mother to find out if indeed it is Billy the Kid in the grave of William Bonnie in Fort Sumpter. Maybe someday the testing will take place and put an end to the controversy.

Wikipedia, the only verified picture of Billy the Kid to survive

Several people came forward over the years claiming to be Billy the Kid, but none have ever been proven to be authentic. I saw a special on television sometime back about studies being done with photographs of the Kid and comparing them to photos of the much older men claiming to be him. One of them matched over 90% on facial recognition software that is used by the FBI to likely be the same person. So maybe Billy the Kid rode off into the sunset after all?

Garrett went onto form a friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt who appointed him tax collector in El Paso, Texas. Things did not go well and Garrett was removed from office and fell into debt. He was eventually murdered just north of Las Cruces, New Mexico being shot in the back. The likely killer was acquitted and no one was ever held accountable for the killing. It truly was the wild west and a very sad end to the lawman Pat Garrett.

That will wrap up this post on Pat Garret and Billy the Kid. I hope you enjoyed seeing the token as much as I did collecting it in the first place. If you have any question or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thank you for all of your support, it truly is greatly appreciated! Have a great week everyone!

Over 90% facial recognition used by the FBI……. I’m no expert, but I would say that that was Billy the kid.😇
Did they produce a photo of this so-called Billy the Kid I would be interested to see that one!
Hope you’re ready for Christmas. I certainly am not Lol
Busy, busy, busy ….🤣

I'll see if I can find the show for you, it was interesting! I think Billy the Kid did ride off into the sunset and some poor guy took a bullet in his place. About as ready as I can be for Christmas, there's always last minute stuff to buy though, you know it works!

Thinking back I might have been wrong about that, I think it was Jesse James that they matched the photos. He may not been quite so dead either!

I love the Wiiliam Bonnie story. I have opinions from reading local history. I think he got away, one way or another and I think he came here, to the NorthWest Territory, specifically to Castle Butte in Big Muddy. That's where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fled, it's where later Capone's guys fled and hid out prohibition alcohol. In the 1920s we made most of the American booze, and we had nearly no police.

Just a theory

Cassidy definitely wasn't killed in Bolivia so it's unlikely Sundance was either. I think chances are very high that William Bonnie also outlived his supposed death. They may have all well have ended up there, no one would have recognized them up that way. The only way they can find out for sure would be to dig up the Kids mother and his supposed body and do DNA testing, but I don't think the courts will ever let that happen!

I'm fairly sure the Kid died in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan in the 1920's.

The wild west indeed. I think there was a lot of betrayal during the 18, 19 and 20th century in not only US but other government or the world, and since the rule of law wasn't completely established back then, people could kill and be killed without any form of retribution. Meanwhile that's a coin with quite a history

When there is a lack of clear law everything is muddy. There were places where the law was actually the bad guys much like when Billy the Kid killed the sheriff who was partly responsible for killing one of his friends. It would have been a dangerous place to live back then.

Thanks, I like this one in the collection!

It's much more fun to think that the guy who was 90% close to Billy the kid is actually Billy the kid.

Hard to say, but it's very possible that Garrett shot the wrong guy and let Billy go because they were friends...

I look at the pictures and remember the photo of my great-grandfather, thinking that black and white photos were the thing at that time, now even our brain has become accustomed to looking for color.
It cannot be denied that black and white denotes elegance, sobriety.

Monochrome does give the feel of being old doesn't it? I have pictures of my great grandfather and great great grandfather in black and white. The world was a very different place back then, although I'm not sure I would have liked to live back then!

Having read about local history, I have thoughts... at one form or another. I believe he managed to escape, and I believe he arrived at the NorthWest Territory, Castle Butte in Big Muddy. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ran away there.
But who knows!

The smart ones vanished and stayed out of the spotlight. They could live a peaceful life without being chased down by bounty hunters. Butch and Sundance didn't die in Bolivia for sure, no one really knows what happened to Etta Place after she left Sundance. She disappeared in Chile and was never heard from again.
